Zinc. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that people who took zinc supplements had 40% fewer colds than those taking a placebo. Plus, the volunteers taking zinc who did end up with a cold, had a‑third fewer symptoms, and recovered as much as 3 days faster.

The reason? Because zinc prevents the cold virus from attaching to certain receptors inside our nose – which keeps them from invading our body and infecting our cells. So, get some zinc lozenges or supplements, and you’ll be much less likely to get sick.

Going outside with wet hair in cold weather won’t make you sick, but it IS likely to give you a headache! As you know, being cold doesn’t give you a cold – because viruses cause colds, not temperature. But when our head gets abnormally chilly, changes are triggered in the sinuses and eye cavities, to prevent damage to the brain from excessive cooling. And those changes can lead to head pain. So there’s your reason NOT to go outside in cold weather with a wet head.

Here are some of the ways we can take advantage of the cooler weather, to help us lose weight AND stay healthy:

First, don’t be afraid to exercise in the cold. Because research in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise shows we actually run faster, and work out longer, in cooler temperatures. It’s mainly because the body has to exert less energy to keep us cool – compared to, say, running on a hot day. And it makes sense that the more muscle we build through exercise, the more calories we’ll burn each day. Which makes us less likely to pack on the pounds.

Also, don’t worry about getting sick when you’re out in the cold. A lot of people think cold air increases our risk for catching infections. But according to Dr. Rachel Vreeman, a professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, the exact opposite is true. Because cold air stresses the body in a way that causes it to release more infection-fighting white blood cells, so we’re LESS likely to get sick. It’s being cooped up indoors that exposes us to more germs from other people. And, the air quality tends to be cleaner outside, compared to indoors.

If your partner – or best friend – is sick, don’t let them borrow your phone. Or if you do, clean it first before you use it again. Gadgets with glass touch screens carry 18 times more bacteria than a toilet’s flush handle! And a recent Stanford University study found that if you put a virus on a glass surface, at least 30% of that virus will end up on your fingertips!

If your kid was vaccinated against the measles – but his friend wasn’t – cancel any playdates or sleepovers. Because even though the measles vaccine is 99% effective – that still leaves a 1% chance your kid can get sick. That’s according to the infectious disease experts at Seattle Children’s Hospital. So even though it’s a long-shot your kids will be infected, why risk it? And yes, the vaccine is safe. The Journal of the American Medical Association says there’s ZERO connection between vaccines and autism.
