If you need a mood boost – put down the cookie and pick up a piece of fruit! Research in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition shows that eating fruit will help you feel calmer and happier than if you eat cookies, candy or chips. That’s because fruit stimulates the release of the mood-boosting brain chemical serotonin. Plus, the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in fruit increase activity in the area of the brain that regulates mood. And choose a wide variety of fruit. Because different fruits contain different happiness-boosting compounds – so the more types of fruit you eat, the better you’ll feel.

You might want to change your tune. A review of 350 studies found produce marred with bumps, scars and dark patches is more nutritious than picture-perfect ones. Because when trees and plants are stressed by insects or disease, they produce more antioxidants as a defense mechanism. You’re more likely to find scarred fruits and vegetables at farmers’ markets and smaller grocery chains. You might even save money, because some vendors cut prices on the ugliest specimens… which also have the most antioxidants.

Eat more fruits and vegetables! Researchers at the University of Buffalo polled 1,000 smokers every month for over a year. At the end of the study, those who ate the most produce were 3 times more likely to be tobacco-free – and to have avoided smoking for at least 30 days… compared to the people who ate the fewest fruits and vegetables. The researchers also found that smokers who consumed the most produce smoked fewer cigarettes per day, waited longer to smoke their first cigarette after waking, and were less dependent on nicotine. So why does eating healthy food help you quit? Because one healthy action often starts a chain reaction of healthy behavior. It gets you thinking in healthier ways – and you don’t want to ruin all your hard work, and blow it, by smoking.

Moms-to-be, you can boost your unborn baby’s brainpower by making fruit your go-to snack. Researchers at the University of Alberta analyzed what mothers-to-be ate, and compared that to each baby’s IQ in the first year of life. The result: Moms who ate more fruit while pregnant had babies who scored higher on developmental tests – and the more fruit they ate, the higher the baby’s IQ. The reason? Because fruit is packed with antioxidants and nutrients, which pass from moms to their unborn babies.

Eating one piece of fruit could help you eat healthier all week. If you eat it right BEFORE you go grocery shopping! Researchers from Cornell University found shoppers who had eaten an apple beforehand bought 28% more produce than cookie-eaters. They also bought less junk food. The explanation is simple: Once you eat a healthy snack, your subconscious guides you to STAY on a healthy path, with almost zero effort. But remember, the trick only works if you eat fruit right BEFORE you shop.

Eat some fruit – fresh AND dried – every day. British researchers found eating one cup of fresh fruit, like an apple – and a‑third of a cup of dried fruit, like raisins or dried apricots, can reduce your risk of heart attack by 40%. It’s down to the plant compounds they contain called polyphenols, which heal and strengthen blood vessel walls, and prevent the buildup of artery-clogging plaque. The recommended amount again: One cup of fresh fruit – and a‑third of a cup of dried fruit.

Have you ever rubbed an apple or a plum on your shirt to clean it? Well, it didn’t do much good. The Produce Safety Alliance at Cornell University says, rubbing fruit on your clothing may remove dust – but NOT bacteria or pesticides. And depending how dirty your shirt is, it could add germs to your fruit. So, if there’s no water handy to rinse fruit, you’re better off using a paper towel to dry-rub that apple.

If you want to eat healthy, stay home and cook! A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that the more meals we cook, the more fruits, vegetables and salads we eat. In fact, the longer it takes to make the meal, the more good-for-us foods we consume – and the fewer sweet snacks and desserts we end up eating.

Is the sugar in fruit the same as the sugar in candy?

fruit-vs-candy

Nope! When the natural sugar, or fructose, is accompanied by the fiber in fruit, the combination helps slow digestion and keeps your blood sugar stable. But when it comes to candy and sweets, they’re made with refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. Those fly through your system, and the energy crash that follows leaves you craving more sweets. However, you have to eat fruit whole for the digestive slow-down to take effect.
