That’s a mash-up of the words flying and migraines… and a lot of people experience head pain on flights because of changes in the cabin pressure. That can result in sinus inflammation, which can trigger intense pain around your eyes and in your nasal cavity. Neurologists have classified it as a “peculiar headache” – because it occurs only on planes, and usually lasts less than an hour. It typically flares up as the plane approaches an airport for landing.

If you’re prone to fly-graines, take an N‑SAID, like Advil or Aleve, or an aspirin, 30 minutes to an hour before landing. You can also chew gum, or pace up and down the aisles to improve your circulation, which can make the pain dissipate faster.

One more solution: Use a nasal decongestant spray to open up your sinuses so they depressurize faster.

Former flight attendant Erika Roth says, if you don’t want to wait for the lavatory, take advantage of two golden windows of opportunity: 1. As soon as the pilot turns off the seatbelt sign… And 2. Just before drink service begins. Roth says, during those times, passengers can realistically expect about 10 minutes of peace inside the restroom to take care of any pressing issues.

A tennis ball. That’s the recommendation of Travel & Leisure magazine.

Because it may be exactly what you need to survive your flight without getting muscle cramps, a blood clot or jet lag.

We all know sitting for an extended amount of time wreaks havoc on our health. That’s why orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ali Ghoz says we should travel with a tennis ball. To increase circulation, roll it over your shoulders, lower back, legs, and the bottoms of your feet. That’ll help get your blood flowing again, even if you can’t get up and walk around every hour.

They can happen if you spend a lazy afternoon on the couch, binge-watching your favorite show! That’s the conclusion of a new study in the journal Circulation. The researchers found people who watched more than five hours of TV a day were two-and-a-half times more likely to have died from a pulmonary embolism. But even watching two-hours of TV a day raised the risk of a pulmonary embolism by 70%. That’s a clot that breaks free, travels to the lungs and causes a heart attack or sudden death. Basically, any time spent sedentary can slow your blood flow way down – leading to clots.

Dr. Elain Hylek is an expert in blood clots – and she says anyone who watches a lot of TV should take steps to reduce their risk.

Like after every half-hour of watching, stand up, stretch, walk around. Or while you’re watching, tense and relax your leg muscles for 5 minutes. Also, drink water while you’re watching, which helps blood flow more smoothly. Dr. Hylek says even if that extra water makes you want to get up and go to the bathroom, THAT alone could reduce your risk.

Here are a couple important numbers to remember the next time you fly, according to a new study from Auburn University:

First, the number 7. That’s how many days the superbug MRSA can survive in an airplane seat pocket. In other words: Think twice about using that pocket to store snacks and drinks.

Also, remember the number 3. That’s how many days bacteria like e.Coli can survive on tray tables.

The lesson? It’s time to start adding some antibacterial wipes to your carry-on bag.

What carbonated beverage do you choose when flying?

Why are people more likely to order ginger ale on a plane than on the ground? Some people think that’s because ginger is known to relieve nausea, like from motion sickness or anxiety. But the ginger ale on planes doesn’t contain any ginger… or if it does, it’s trace amounts of ginger concentrate for flavoring. So it’s not providing the medicinal benefits. So why pick ginger ale?

It’s more likely the placebo effect at work. We THINK it’s going to make us feel better, so it does. But really, ANY carbonated drink would make us feel better. Because, according to neurobiologist Dr. E. Carstens from UC Davis, when the carbon dioxide bubbles pop on your tongue, they react with an enzyme on your taste buds and create carbonic acid. Like most acids, the carbonic acid hurts a little, but it’s a good hurt because it makes your brain release feel-good endorphins.

You’ll reduce your odds of getting sick on a plane if you shower before your flight! That’s according to a study in Environmental Science and Technology. They found compounds in body oils interact with ozone in the cabin to form chemical byproducts. The result? The greasiest people were most likely to complain of throat and nasal irritation, headaches, and an overall in-flight sick feeling.

…you may want to leave that tray table in the upright and locked position. That’s because disease-causing germs like MRSA and E. coli can linger on airplane armrests, window shades, tray tables, and toilet handles for days, according to scientists from Auburn University. Plus, contact with those pathogens could lead to antibiotic resistant infections and a gut bug that can cause kidney failure. And that’s not an exaggeration… the MRSA found on a cloth seatback pocket lasted 168 hours — which is a week… and the E. coli on an airplane armrest hung around for 4 days. So wash your hands frequently when you’re flying, and don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth until you do.

Arrive at the airport wearing loose, non-binding clothing – instead of tight-fitting. It’s not just about being comfortable on a long flight. It could save your life. According to travel expert Christopher Elliot, wearing form-fitting clothing can reduce circulation in your legs – which raises your risk for developing deep vein thrombosis – dangerous blood clots that can break free and lodge in your lungs or brain, and cause a stroke, or even instant death. So wear your sweats. You may not look fashionable – but you’ll live longer.

On your next plane flight, bring some gum! The chewing stimulates saliva – and the extra swallowing helps equalize the pressure between your inner and outer ear. Plus, we tend to hold a lot of tension in our jaw – and chewing gum releases it. It also boosts blood flow to your brain and reduces levels of stress hormones. So if you have any flying anxiety, you’ll feel more relaxed.
