Next time you go to a grocery store or farmer’s market, buy flowers. Because just seeing cut flowers at home or work produces feel-good brain chemicals, and makes us less anxious and prone to depression. Plus, MRIs show looking at flowers increases blood flow to the brain area linked to feelings of empathy and altruism, and makes us friendlier. So we end up thinking fewer negative thoughts and thinking more about others, instead of ourselves. It’s the power of flowers!

Keep flowers on your nightstand! Harvard psychology professor Dr. Nancy Etcoff says any fresh flowers are such a mood-booster, they can even prevent workday blues. Fresh flowers also reduce anxiety and stress, two major sleep disruptors – which means, you’ll be sleeping better and waking up happier within a few days. But replace the flowers when they start to wither and turn brown. Otherwise, they can make you feel that time is slipping away and things are out of control in your life.

Look at something containing “fractals,” or repeating patterns… Like how a flower’s petals are all the same shape, getting bigger as they go from the center to the outer edge. There are also repeating patterns in leaves, seashells and ocean waves. Researchers found repeating patterns calming, so looking at a natural fractal for a few minutes can reduce stress by up to 60%! No natural fractals around? Try the app FRACT.AL or go to FractalFoundation.org.

University of Washington researchers found a window view is far more soothing, and lowers a person’s heart rate farther, than watching TV. But there’s a catch: It has to be a view of nature. If you’re looking at a cityscape of buildings, traffic, and crowds, instead of flowers, trees or water, it’s not going to lower your stress.

Look out a window. Researchers at the University of Washington found the view outside is far more soothing – and lowers a person’s heart rate further than plopping in front of the TV. But there’s a catch: It has to be a view of nature. If you’re looking at a cityscape of buildings, traffic, and crowds of pedestrians, instead of flowers, trees or a burbling fountain, it’s not going to lower your stress.

There’s a reason window boxes are traditionally filled with marigolds and geraniums: Mosquitoes hate them! They contain oil that naturally repels mosquitoes. In fact, a few drops of geranium oil can keep mosquitoes away for 90 minutes. So why not plant some? They emit scent molecules that are effective within a 10-foot radius.

Put some fresh flowers on your desk. Scientists have found that people who inhale a floral scent complete memory and learning tests 17% faster. That’s because floral fragrances activate the part of the brain that stores new information.
