Don’t coast on the downhill – put your back into it! Research from the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport says runners and cyclists who keep their momentum going downhill increase their overall exercise intensity. So if you’re running, take longer strides – cycling, use a higher gear. Because maintaining that intensity can put you on a faster track to fitness.

Take the data with a grain of salt, because the number of steps and calories burned usually is not 100% accurate. Researchers at Cal Poly Pomona had study participants wear the four most popular fitness trackers while exercising: Apple Watch, Fitbit Charge HR, Samsung Gear S and Mio Alpha. And compared heart activity with the tracker data.

The result: Every device was pretty inaccurate. But the good news is, they UNDER-estimated activity levels – some by up to 43%! So, you’re probably getting more exercise than you knew.
And your tracker may not be giving credit where credit is due.

Are you sweating more than the guy next to you?

If you’re dripping with sweat during Cross Fit, while the guy next to you seems dry… Don’t sweat it! You may actually be more fit than they are! Sports scientist Dr. Lindsay Baker says sweat is how the body cools itself when our core temperature rises. And because a fit person is better at regulating their core temperature, they start sweating sooner – and more profusely – than someone who’s not as fit. You may also be bigger than the runner NOT sweating next to you. Bigger people sweat more than smaller people, because their bodies produce more heat. That’s why men tend to sweat more than women.

If you can’t do a regular push-up on the ground – start this way. Use a high counter instead. Once you can master 5 reps with good form at the kitchen counter, move to a desk, then a stable chair, then the second step of a staircase, then you’ll be ready for the floor. And a push-up is one of the single best, full-body exercises you can do. It engages your abs, arms, and chest.

If you want to try high-intensity interval training, it’s as easy as remembering these numbers: 30-20-10. That’s an equation that adds up to exercise success, according to research from Denmark.
So choose your favorite form of cardio and go easy for 30 seconds… increase your exertion for the next 20 seconds… Then go all out for 10 seconds – and repeat that pattern 10 times. That’s the 30-20-10 method. And because it seems so doable, when people in studies tried it, they were more likely to stick with it. And they improved their overall fitness and lowered their blood pressure.

Instead of saying “I WANT to be in great shape,” say “I’m getting in better shape every day.” Because the word “want” signifies we lack something – in this case, fitness. And when we feel we’re lacking something, we tend to get discouraged. But focusing on our current exercise progress – by saying “I’m getting in better shape every day” – reminds us that we have what it takes to be successful……And that motivates us to get on the treadmill.

Tuesday
. Or at least that’s the day we’re most likely to “fitness brag” on social media. And getting in a workout on a Tuesday is a good idea. Exercise psychologist Dr. Michelle Cleere says a workout early in the week can inspire you to keep it up. But if we don’t get a workout in by Wednesday, we’re more likely to blow off fitness for the entire week.

It’s not the stinky locker room you need to worry about at the gym – it’s the indoor air pollution! University of Lisbon research shows the air in weight rooms and studio spaces can be teeming with illness-causing pollutants. In fact, researchers found that 82% of the fitness centers tested had high levels of volatile organic compounds – or V‑O‑Cs. Which are released from the rubber mats, medicine balls, plastic-coated barbells, yoga blocks, and foam pilates noodles. They’re compounds that can irritate your airways, and even cause cancer. And since most of us breathe heavily at the gym, we’re more likely to breathe IN those contaminants.

mix-up-workoutIf you’ve been hitting the gym on a regular basis, but you’re not seeing results any more – it’s time to change things up! According to fitness expert Mary Jayne Rogers, when you’re starting a new exercise routine, your body isn’t as efficient, so you burn more calories…But as you get used to the exercise and become more fit – the same routine require much less energy. So, if you’ve been swimming laps, try the elliptical. And if you’ve been sticking with yoga, it may be time to try Pilates. When your body gets a new challenge, you’ll see results again.
