If you and your significant other fight and bicker all the time – not only is your relationship in trouble, so is your heart!

According to UC Berkeley, constantly fighting causes your cardiovascular system to overload… and that can damage your blood vessels. The result? High blood pressure. But avoiding fights isn’t much better. The researchers found that stonewalling – or giving your partner the silent treatment – caused muscle tension, headaches and sore joints. So, choose your battles wisely, let some things go, and when you need to hash things out – do it in a calm, rational way. Remember, you’re together for a reason. And having a loving relationship is definitely GOOD for your heart health!

Have you ever felt hungry after an argument? Research in the journal Psychological Science found the more stress we feel, the higher our levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin! And when we’re stressed, we tend to reach for sugary, high-fat treats, which drastically raises our risk for depression and weight gain. The good news? Researchers say just KNOWING this can happen can boost our health. Because while we can’t change how our body reacts to stress, we can change the foods we have on hand. That way, you’ll be less likely to blow your diet after your next blowup argument.

Having a knockdown, drag-out fight with someone, and then trying to blow off steam by going for a run or punching a heavy bag. New research from McMaster University shows, intense anger coupled with heavy physical exertion can be what triggers a first heart attack. The new research looked at more than 12,000 people, and intense activity and intense emotions each double the odds of having a heart attack within an hour. But if you’re really ticked off AND you exert yourself, your risk triples.

And if you’re thinking – “Well, I’m not a smoker, I don’t have high blood pressure and I’m not overweight” – it doesn’t matter; the risk is the same regardless. So, if you go mental on someone, don’t try to burn off your excess energy by mountain biking. Take calming breaths and do some yoga instead. You’ll increase your chances of settling whatever argument you had, instead of meeting your maker.

One study found that people who took aspirin daily for 10 years were less likely to experience symptoms of depression. Researchers believe it’s because aspirin reduces inflammation… And a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that brain inflammation is 30% higher in people with clinical depression.

If you’ve just had a screaming match with someone – be careful for the next 2 hours. Because your heart attack risk will be over 8 times higher than normal. That’s due to the stress hormones flooding your body – and the rise in blood pressure and heart rate. So the next time you get riled up by a fight – or you get angry at traffic – ask yourself if it’s worth a medical emergency. Then, take slow, deep breaths. That’ll help relax your blood vessels and slow your heart rate, so you can get out of the anger-induced danger zone.
