Look at the last loving text you were sent and blow up the font like you’re majorly farsighted. According to German research, reading upbeat, positive messages can lift us out of a funk. But by blowing up the font to 28 points or larger, we can make those positive feelings last 20% longer! That’s because our brain interprets larger words as more important. So those loving text messages will have a more powerful effect.

You may not even be aware of it, but psychologist Dr. Susan Bartell says YES! Here are a few of the things that can bring you down – and what to do about them.

#1: Family heirlooms. Dr. Bartell says we feel guilty getting rid of them because they’re supposed to hold memories. But instead, they can weigh us down emotionally and cause physical clutter. So, Dr. Bartell says, let those things go. Ask another family member if they want it. If not – and it’s not “Antiques-Roadshow”-worthy – get rid of it.

What else could be bumming you out in your own home? Heavy drapes! Their physical weight and the way they block light can make a home feel old, sad, and tired.

Finally, old paperwork can make us depressed. It’s a constant reminder of bills and obligations. So shred anything you don’t need, and make a point of filing things away. That way, the sight of paperwork won’t drag you down emotionally.

Experts from the University of Rochester have found the reason we call feeling down “having the blues!” Because when we’re happy, colors seem brighter and more vivid… But when we’re depressed, the world looks gray and gloomy. That’s because our emotions affect the way our brain processes color! In other words, when we’re sad, our brain literally bleaches some of the color out of the images being sent from our eyes to our brain – and makes colors less intense – and gloomier – across the board.

Don’t watch a tearjerker and break out the Ben & Jerry’s at the same time.

Because when we’re already feeling sad or depressed, we can’t taste fat as well. So it’s less satisfying, and we tend to overeat to get the taste we crave. If you can’t watch “The Notebook” without some Chunky Monkey, make sure you dish out a single serving, so you don’t eat the whole carton.

Drink more water! A recent study found that people who were dehydrated felt more angry, tense, and sad than those who drank plenty of water. So, the next time you’re feeling cranky, grab a glass of water and see if you don’t feel better.
