…just TRY! A study in the Journal of Positive Psychology found people who TRY to cheer up report a greater happiness boost than those who wait for something to come along to change their mood. Psychology professor Yuna Ferguson says, when we have the intention to feel happier, we’re more likely to notice and

appreciate the good things around us.

That’s according to a new study from Princeton University. But if you’re one of the 15% who usually feels down, stick a few baby pictures in your wallet or keep them on your phone. Don’t have kids? Photos of other people’s babies and even baby animals can do the trick. The reason? A study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found looking at baby pictures activates a part of the brain associated with positive emotions, which can boost your mood almost instantly.

At the end of your shower, blast your body with COLD water for 30-seconds. It’ll feel shocking at first… But afterward, you’ll feel invigorated. Columbia University researchers say the cold blast will trigger your body to conserve heat by moving blood away from your skin toward your core – to protect your internal organs. And that can induce a racing heart and shortness of breath, which boosts your metabolism and produces energizing happiness-boosting endorphins. It’s like a cold-shower-high, and it has an antidepressant effect.

Play some tunes, but put your playlist on shuffle!

Research shows that when we don’t know what song is coming next, the pleasure centers of our brain light up. And every time there’s a musical surprise – which happens every 3 or 4 minutes – we get a flood of feel-good brain chemicals. They not only perk up our mood, they improve our memory and help us solve complex problems.

In fact, anything that engages both hands in rhythmic, repetitive motion can have the same effect – like embroidery or sewing. That’s according to the journal Neuro-psycho-pharmacology. The repetitive movements trigger your brain to release the mood-lifting chemical serotonin… and when your mind is focused on an absorbing task, it blocks out negative thoughts.

Take a brisk morning walk! Researchers at George Mason University say exercise releases feel-good hormones, triggering a mood boost that can last up to 48 hours. Plus, starting the day on a high note creates a so-called “cascade of positivity” – where one good thing leads to another. It increases the likelihood you’ll get more done, have positive interactions with others, and have less impact from negative events. And the longer you work out, and the more social you make it – like walking with a friend – the happier you’ll feel.

…check your posture while you’re sitting. Slouching can not only lead to back and shoulder pain, but because hunched posture is associated with being drained and bummed out, it can start making you feel that way. But the opposite is also true. The Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry found that people who sat up straight, spine in line and shoulders back, felt more enthusiastic and less fatigued, and it even boosted their brain activity.

When you get stressed out, sniff an orange. The scent of oranges activates the same brain nerves that antidepressants and hormones do. Which can help us feel happier and less anxious in as little as two minutes.

…dust off your DVD collections, and watch one of your favorite movies.

Or watch that re-run of Seinfeld for the 10th time.

Studies suggest that people who watch old favorites on a regular basis are happier, more focused, and more motivated, even on the grayest, overcast day…compared to those who always watch something new.

That’s because already knowing what familiar characters are going to say lets your brain relax, which reduces tension, boosts your energy, and improves your mood.
