It contains an antioxidant called chlorogenic acid – or CGA. It’s a polyphenol that encourages the body to burn fat and increases our levels of leptin. That’s the “I’m full” hormone, which suppresses appetite, so we eat less. In a study, women who got 1,000 milligrams of CGA daily lost three times more weight.

You’ll get 1,300 milligrams of chlorogenic acid from a large Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.

Even better? Get a cold-brewed coffee from Starbucks. Cold brewing means the coffee grounds never get heated – and brewing at high heat degrades the antioxidants, specifically chlorogenic acid.

Here’s a key to remember when you want the most fat-burning from your coffee. Beans with the highest CGA content are typically grown at high altitudes and close to the equator. So if the beans are from countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia and parts of Brazil, you’re good to go.

…according to biochemists at John Moores University: Try eating unripe bananas. They contain resistant starch – which is crucial for weight loss. Because even though resistant starch is a carb, it’s chemical make-up doesn’t cause our blood sugar to rise. Resistant starch also helps release a hormone that increases fat burning. And scientists say the less-ripe a banana is, the more resistant starch it contains. So aim to eat 20 grams of resistant starch a day – or 2 unripe bananas.

A slightly under-ripe, green banana. They’re loaded with resistant starch, a type of carbohydrate that passes through the small intestine without being digested. That encourages the population of healthy gut bacteria, and makes us feel full for an extended period of time. It also makes us more efficient at burning fat.

If so, you’re a lean, mean, fat burning machine. Researchers from Denmark found runners who logged about 3 miles a week lost an average of 4 pounds in a year – while keeping their diet exactly the same. BUT, runners who also cut back the usual suspects – soda, snacks and junk food – lost 12 pounds on average. And notice I said “cut back” – they didn’t have to drop those fun foods entirely. So lace up your running shoes, do 3.1 miles a week, and you’re guaranteed to lose weight.

Are you trying to drop pounds?

Then keep this in mind from Dr. Mark Hyman – author of “Ultra-Metabolism”…
Stop eating 3 hours before bed. Our metabolism slows down while we sleep, and shifts from fat burning to fat storing. So that midnight snack stays with you a loooong time.
