Skip these foods that cause gas…

First, be careful with sugar-free gum. It contains sorbitol – which takes a long time to digest. And undigested sorbitol in your small intestine acts as hothouse, fermenting bacteria, which can cause flatulence.

Also, skip protein bars that contain soy. Processed soy-isolate contains sugar molecules that the body can’t break down entirely. So they hang out in the gut, fermenting, and causing gas and bloating.

One more gas-inducing food: Almond milk! It can contain a thickening agent called carrageenan. It’s made from seaweed, and it’s been linked to ulcers, inflammation, and other gastrointestinal problems.

Why do we get sleepy and gassy on airplanes?

Blame it on the air pressure. At cruising altitude, our blood absorbs less oxygen, which can make us sleepy, dizzy, and mentally fuzzy. So, get up every hour and do a couple deep knee bends or lunges to boost the oxygen in your blood. And eat spinach, which has B‑vitamins that boost the supply of oxygen-rich red blood cells to your brain and muscles. And getting gassy on a plane is also due to reduced air pressure. It causes gas to expand in the body. So avoid carbonated beverages and high-fiber foods, which will increase that gas even more.

But if yours is out of control, try adding artichokes to your diet.

Researchers found that eating 3 small artichokes a week – or 4 whole artichoke hearts – cuts the risk of intestinal gas by 70%! That’s because artichokes are the only natural source of cynarin – an acid that speeds the breakdown of fats and carbs, so our body absorbs them faster. That means food doesn’t hang out in our digestive tract, fermenting and creating gas. Here’s another fact about cynarin. You can’t taste it, but it causes the next bite of whatever you eat to taste just a little sweeter than it otherwise would. It can even make water taste sweet.

Going on a date – have an important meeting? Skip these foods that cause gas… and they’re not the usual suspects like broccoli and beans.

First, be careful with sugar-free gum. Not only are you taking in more air when you chomp gum, which can cause gas and burping. The ingredient in sugar-free gum – sorbitol – takes a relatively long time to digest, and undigested sorbitol in your small intestine acts as a hothouse, fermenting bacteria, which can cause flatulence.

Also, skip protein bars that contain soy. The processed “soy isolate” contains sugar molecules that the body can’t break down entirely. So they hang out in the gut, ferment, and cause gas and bloating.

One more gas-inducing food: Almond milk! Dairy doesn’t have the lock on stomach distress. Almond milk can contain a thickening agent called carrageenan. It’s made from seaweed, and it’s been linked to ulcers, inflammation, and other gastrointestinal problems.

Get ginger. Candied ginger is not only a sweet treat, it can reduce the amount of gas in your digestive system. That’s according to research from University Hospitals in Cleveland. They say there’s a compound in ginger – called gingerol – that reduces inflammation in the intestines, helps the body break down and digest carbohydrates, and stimulates the release of bile… And bile is what breaks down fats, which can irritate the intestines. All you need are two slices of candied ginger when you’re feeling gassy and bloated. And if gas is a chronic problem for you, make candied ginger a daily treat. It can cut gas by 40% or more.
