Because scrolling through all the pictures of your fabulous life can make you feel great! But, communications Science professor Dr. Catalina Toma says, there’s a downside. She says reliving all those fun times can make you feel like you don’t need to improve yourself, because your life is so wonderful, and you’ll be less likely to hit the gym. You may live longer than people who don’t. That’s according to research from UC San Diego. But there IS a catch: The researchers found, you’ll only extend your life if most of your interactions are with people you’re already close to in real life. So, have a Facebook Messenger chat with your favorite cousin on your lunch break, or post old college photos on a friend’s page for “Throwback Thursday.” The longevity benefit you get from Facebook is the result of connecting with people in a real way. So, just like face-to-face socializing can reduce stress and help us live longer – so can REAL Facebook friendships.

If you post a happy picture or an uplifting quote on Facebook, you could improve someone else’s day. According to a study from UC San Diego, the emotions expressed online are contagious – whether they’re positive or negative. Researchers analyzed the emotional content of 1 billion Facebook posts – and found that the language we use impacts the words our friends use in their posts… which creates what experts call a “social multiplier.” The good news is: Positive emotions spread faster and farther than negative ones.

If you want an emotional boost from Facebook or Twitter, check your feed on a bright, sunny day. More negative posts pop up on rainy days and at night, because that’s when we tend to feel more emotional and down in the dumps.
