You know the old saying ‘nice guys finish last.’ But we should change that to ‘nice guys live longer!’ Researchers from New South Wales University interviewed over 200 men who’d reached their 100th birthdays.

The conclusion? Men who reached that age milestone were more optimistic and open-minded and were more likely to have close relationships with others. And they were less prone to negative emotions, like anger, stress, and hostility. And numerous studies show that upbeat extroverts tend to be healthier and live longer, than downers.

Even the most outgoing, extroverted person needs some alone time. Because socializing is exhausting – for our brain. That’s the conclusion of new research from the University of Helsinki. They found that the more social people were, the more they reported being in a positive mood and feeling lower levels of fatigue. But those effects wore off at the 3-hour mark. After that, people who were still interacting with a group saw their mood drop and their fatigue increase. And that was true for social butterflies AND introverts. That’s because socializing is really taxing on the brain. Conversations, processing language, activating your memory and reading body language use up a lot of mental energy. And for anyone, talking to a bunch of people for a long time – specifically 3-hours – is draining. So maybe we should all make sure our parties are only 3-hours long.

While it’s true that the more people we’re around – the more infections we’re exposed to, that’s actually a good thing. It strengthens our immunity over time. And the British Medical Journal found that extroverts, who spent a lot of time with others, had heartier immune systems and were more resilient when they did get sick, than loners. Another upside of being social? Researchers think that spending time with other people stimulates certain genes that help the body fight off viruses.
