You exercise like crazy – so why aren’t you losing weight? You may be eating back all the calories you burned – and then some. That’s a symptom of “runger” – the hunger you feel after a big workout or long run. To avoid runger, have a small snack 30 minutes before your workout. Something low-fat and carb-based — like graham crackers with a teaspoon of honey. That’ll digest easily and give you instant energy. Then, an hour after you exercise, have only protein and healthy fats. That’ll keep you feeling full so you won’t overeat.

What’s the very best way to boost your overall health? Keep a regular schedule for eating, sleeping, exercising and taking medication. That advice comes from Dr. David Agus. He’s one of the world’s leading cancer doctors. Dr. Agus says, when we maintain a regular schedule, we’ll feel more energized and our health will automatically improve. And because our body expects certain things at certain times, we’ll sleep better, have better digestion and keep our body rhythms in sync.

Next time you hit the treadmill, raise the incline. Exercise physiologist Tom Holland says the “zero setting” on most machines is actually slightly downhill. He says a 1-point-zero incline will be flatter, and help you burn more calories.

That’s the recommendation from the Finnish government, which advised parents to actively encourage kids to pursue hobbies and interests that require physical exertion. Especially kids age 8 and UNDER! That may sound a bit extreme over here – where most of the population never breaks a sweat. But according to the BBC, Finland produces some of the most physically fit children in Europe, and some of the highest academic results among schoolchildren in the world. So maybe there’s a link between all that exercise and smart kids. Finland’s Minister for Education and Culture thinks it’s no coincidence. She says physical activity contributes to a child’s happiness and promotes learning. Again – the recommendation from the Finnish government is: Kids should spend 3 hours exercising – every DAY.

Would you believe it’s the wine! That’s according to a study from the University of Alberta. They found that the polyphenols in red wine, nuts, and grapes may be just as good for us, if not better, than exercise. That’s because they all contain a compound called resveratrol, which improves bone, muscle and heart health in the same way a workout does. But before you break out the corkscrew, remember… the benefits only come from one glass a day – not the entire bottle. Also, it doesn’t mean you should stop exercising altogether.

After a tough workout, should we apply heat – or ice to our sore muscles?

The answer is: Ice.

Heat is relaxing but does little to speed recovery. But cold temperatures constrict blood flow, which helps reduce swelling and inflammation. That’s from physical therapist Tony Mikla. He says if we have a specific problem spot – like an aching knee or hamstring – slap on a cold pack for a maximum of 15 minutes immediately after every workout.

Then take a break! Japanese researchers have discovered that taking a rest in the middle of your workout – for instance, exercising for 15 minutes, taking a 10-minute break, then exercising for another 15 minutes – actually burns more fat than powering straight through!

If you’re one of the millions of people popping a sleeping pill – save your money and start exercising. People who exercise four days a week, for an hour at a time, fall asleep faster and wake up less during the night – adding an average of 48 more minutes of sleep to their bedtime each night.
