And the stronger your legs are, the stronger your memory will be. That’s according to research from King’s College London. They followed over 300 sets of twins between age 43 and 73. The result: After more than a decade, the twin with the strongest legs had 18% less age-related cognitive decline… Meaning, their brain was more than 3 years younger than the brain of the sibling who was less-active. The stronger twin also had more gray matter, and a measurable boost in activity in the area of the brain linked to memory.

The researchers believe it’s because physical activities that build leg strength, like walking, trigger production of human growth hormone, which helps repair brain cells and grow new ones.

New research from The University of Sussex in England found that talking on the phone hands-free while driving is just as distracting and dangerous as using a hand-held phone. That’s because both types of conversations make drivers visualize what the other person is talking about… And as a result, drivers noticed fewer road hazards – even when they looked directly at them! The researchers say, the only safe car conversation is with a front seat passenger. Because they can be scanning for road hazards, too – and they know to stop talking when you need to concentrate.

Here’s a fun and surprising way to lose weight without changing your diet: Fill your Instagram feed with pictures of nutritious foods… And “follow” people who do the same. Researchers at the University of Leeds in England found people that see shots of nutritious foods right before a meal make healthier food choices, and eat fewer calories. That’s because the pictures prime us to crave the healthy foods we’ve just seen.

Here are two ways:

• In England, the go-to for an upset stomach is peppermint tea. It relieves cramps and constipation by relaxing the muscles from the esophagus on down. Just don’t use it if you have heartburn. Because that relaxing effect can allow acid to splash back up.

• And in Indonesia, they reach for nutmeg. Try sprinkling half a teaspoon on mashed banana, or mixing it in yogurt. Nutmeg is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory – and calms stomachaches, spasms and diarrhea.
