Do you find it hard to power through your daily 3 o’clock energy slump? Skip the coffee. Because if you have it that late, it’ll disrupt your sleep that night. Instead: Sit up tall, hands on your thighs, palms up. Close your eyes for 30 seconds, and breathe deeply. What does that do? Putting your hands palm up rotates the shoulders outward, which opens up your chest, and sends more oxygen to your muscles and brain. And that’ll supply an almost instant jolt of energy. One more time: Sit up tall, hands on your thighs, palms up. Close your eyes for 30 seconds, and breathe deeply.

Need an energy boost? First thing in the morning, open the windows or take a walk, and focus on the birds you can hear chirping. Yale researchers say hearing birdsong for 15 minutes can boost energy levels by 25% or more. Because it’s a happy sound which registers in the brain’s frontal lobe and produces energizing beta waves. But if the birds aren’t cooperating, a CD or app that plays birdsong will work fine.

If you’re constantly exhausted, even when you sleep enough, you might need more B‑12! The vitamin boosts production of energizing and mood-boosting chemicals, like dopamine and serotonin. That’s why the two classic signs of low B‑12 are lack of energy and blue moods! But the best natural sources of B‑12 aren’t so popular: Like sardines, mackerel and organ meats, including liver and kidneys. So ask your doctor about taking a thousand-microgram supplement. That can reverse fatigue and cut your risk of depression in half within 3 weeks. You can also get B-12 from foods like beef, salmon, milk, fortified cereals and soy products.

A study at the University of Toronto found up-tempo music can boost energy and creativity because it literally alters our brainwaves. And if the song is familiar to you, even better. Because if you already know the song, you start anticipating what comes next, and you’ll get an even bigger energy boost. So make a playlist full of upbeat songs just for work.

Try a finger massage! University of Miami researchers found taking 5 minutes to firmly massage the tips of your fingers can boost energy, alertness, and concentration for up to two hours! That’s because it stimulates acupressure points linked to the frontal lobes of the brain. And that produces energizing beta waves that enhance focus! So during your next 3pm energy slump, try a 5-minute finger massage. That’ll power you through the rest of the workday.

Swap your next cup of coffee for peppermint tea… it’s proven to boost your energy, focus AND alertness within minutes. That’s from The International Journal of Neuroscience. Researchers found that mint’s aroma alone helps stimulate the brain’s memory centers, which means it’ll clear up any brain fog that’s slowing you down, and help you focus. It’s similar to what happens when you first bite into a piece of peppermint gum, and you get an icy cool sensation in your mouth that wakes you up!

Meanwhile, menthol – which is the active ingredient in mint – is proven to relax muscles and arteries in a way that increases blood flow. The upshot being that if your energy is being dragged down by stress, for example, sipping peppermint tea is the perfect way to get your energy back.

Watch one of your favorite movies or reruns of your favorite TV show. Research at the University of Buffalo found that familiar storylines create a so-called “restorative effect” by relaxing our brain. Providing an instant energy boost, improving our willpower, self-control and problem-solving skills – while new shows have no effect. The reason? Because familiar stories – just like familiar places, people and foods – can be incredibly comforting.

Skip the energy drinks, and drink some OJ, instead. Researchers in Korea gave tired office workers IVs filled with plain saline solution, or saline solution spiked with high doses of vitamin C. The result: The “C” receivers were less tired than those who got the placebo. The reason? Because “C” reduces oxidative stress, which contributes to fatigue.

You don’t have to EAT a grapefruit to get a quick energy boost. Just inhaling the scent of grapefruit increases energy levels and alertness. It turns out, the chemical that gives the fruit its aroma – called limonene – stimulates our sympathetic nervous system. And that gets our body revved up. And bonus points: The scent also decreases hunger and appetite. So try taking a whiff of grapefruit essential oil when you need a boost.

When your energy is low, make sure you have a tangerine – or tangerine oil – on hand. Taking 6 slow breaths of that scent activates the brain’s limbic system, producing energizing beta waves. And the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation says, within a minute, you’ll have less fatigue and more energy.
