Researchers at Loma Linda University had people watch a FUNNY 20-minute video or a neutral documentary. Those who saw the funny video performed better on memory tests. But you don’t even have to laugh out loud… because a genuine smile produces mood-boosting dopamine and endorphins. So the next time you need to perform well on a task – watch a video that makes you laugh or smile. As long as your smile is authentic – you’ll get the mood-boosting benefits.

If you feel achy when the days get shorter, and the temperatures start to drop, you’ve got a lot of company. The reason? Because our body’s production of mood-boosting and painkilling endorphins drops as we head from Fall into Winter – when our pituitary kind of goes into hibernation.

But studies show acupressure can boost endorphin production. The trick: Firmly massage the outside edge of your ears from the tops, to the lobes, for one minute… And it’ll soothe your aches and pains for at least an hour.

Next time you’re on an airline flight, look around and count how many people order ginger ale. A bunch of ‘em, right? That’s because a lot of people know, and we’ve talked about it on this show, that ginger can relieve nausea and motion sickness. But the fact is, conventional ginger ale doesn’t contain any ginger… Or if it does, it’s trace amounts of ginger-concentrate, for flavoring. So it’s not providing the medicinal benefits. So then…why pick ginger ale?

Experts say it’s more likely the placebo effect at work. We believe it’s going to make us feel better, so it does. But really, any carbonated drink would make us feel better. According to neurobiologist Dr. E. Carstens from UC Davis, when the carbon dioxide bubbles pop on your tongue, they react with an enzyme on your taste buds to create carbonic acid. Like most acids, carbonic acid stings just a little, but it’s a good, fizzy sting. And Dr. Carstens says the mild pain makes your brain send feel-good endorphins into your bloodstream. So you do, in fact, feel better… And since we believe it’s the ginger doing the work, the feeling is enhanced that much more.

It’s a “thing” – it’s called “Relaxation-induced anxiety.” The University of Cincinnati says it’s real and it’s pretty common. That’s because we live our lives at such a frantic pace, trying to sit still on vacation can feel unnatural. If that’s you, don’t plan massages and lazy beach days – plan some activities. Swim laps, try surfing, go for an excursion. You’ll get the endorphin fix you crave.

To feel more energized in the middle of your workday, all you need is a 30-minute walk. In a study, people who did that 3 times a week for 3 months had more energy, were less stressed, and felt more optimistic. It’s all down to the endorphins that get released when we’re active. That’s according to the Journal Of Medicine & Science in Sports.

Dr. Ashwin Mehta is the director of integrative medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He says that capsaicin – the compound that makes peppers hot – tricks our brain into releasing pain-killing endorphins. It also blocks the release of chemicals that increase sensations of pain. So, have a spicy burrito. Your mouth may be on fire, but you’ll have less pain.

Sometimes it’s hard to pry yourself out from under the covers to hit the gym.

So here are 3 science-based ways to increase your exercise motivation…

•Start by telling yourself you only have to workout for 7 minutes. And if you want to give up after that, give yourself permission. But you probably won’t give up. That’s because it only takes 6 minutes for your body’s feel-good endorphins to kick in once you start working out.

•Listen to your gym playlist on the way to the gym. It stimulates the brain’s hippocampus – which is where we store our memories. And because you’re used to hearing those songs when you work out, it primes you to get in an exercise mood.

•Workout with someone who’s 40% more fit than you. In a study from Kansas State University, people who did that worked out harder and longer than they would have if they exercised alone. It works because we’re competitive by nature…We compare ourselves to others all the time – whether we’re aware of it or not. Plus, it also gives us a sense of camaraderie that’s motivating. So why 40%? Researchers say that’s a sweet spot where your workout buddy is good enough to inspire you – but not so out of your league that you can’t keep up.

meditate

You don’t need to meditate for an hour to get the results you want. All you need are 180 seconds! Or 3 minutes of meditation.

Researchers at UCLA found that just 3 minutes of relaxed, focused breathing decreases the stress hormones that constrict blood vessels and make your muscles tense up. Meditation also boosts production of feel-good endorphin levels. All in just 3 minutes.
