Do you cry at weddings and sappy movies?

Maybe even commercials that tug on our heartstrings? You’re healthy. The journal Psychological Science says people who cry in social situations are actually better at managing their emotions! That’s because crying when you’re touched by something – or even when you’re overwhelmed by happiness – is a way of processing and coping with your emotions. And when we let ourselves get emotional, we get back in control of our feelings faster.

Roses, lavender, birch trees, sweet basil, tomatoes, and coriander? They contain a compound called linalool, which produces a scent that lowers stress hormones. It’s found in over 200 species of plants and produce. And scents can calm us down because they bypass the rational, thinking part of our brain and go straight to the emotional center.

Are you feeling “sweepy?”

That’s when you’re sleepy and weepy, and get overly emotional. And there’s a reason for it. Because when we’re sleep-deprived, activity increases in the brain area that produces emotion. Plus, when we’re tired, our ability to control our emotions is weaker.

So if you cry at commercials when you’re tired – or burst into tears when someone gives you side-eye, that’s why. You’re sweepy.

You know how pro athletes visualize themselves sinking a putt – or hitting a home run – and it can help them achieve those results in real life? Well, we can use visualization to manage our emotions, too. Dr. Stephan Kosslyn is a neuroscientist, and he says, imagining yourself doing something strengthens the connection between the body and the brain. So, let’s say every time your boss talks to you it makes you so anxious you can hardly think straight. Try this: Picture an encounter with the boss. Hear her condescending voice, picture how she stands, and the way she looks at you over the rim of her glasses. The point is to trigger your anxious response – and then breathe deeply and slowly and calm yourself down. Practice that trick half a dozen times – and the next time your boss says, “Come to my office I want to have a word with you,” your body and brain will be primed to stay cool, calm and collected.

In a study conducted by the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, researchers showed study subjects a video designed to make them feel queasy. One group smelled rose oil – another smelled nothing. Well, the group that sniffed rose oil felt 50% less nauseous than the other group. The researchers say certain scents can conjure up powerful emotions. And if that emotional response is positive, it distracts the brain enough to ease motion sickness. And you don’t necessarily need rose oil. Any pleasant scent will do the trick. The researchers say you can start with your favorite cologne or perfume – which hopefully elicits a positive sensory response for you.

Why? Because studies show that having healthy emotional habits also improves your physical health.

•Avoid the blame game. Adults who point fingers or get vindictive when they’re angry are 31% more likely to develop heart problems. According to the study at the Columbia University Medical School, adults who discuss their anger directly and try to work things out have no increase in anger-related heart disease.

•Be a “glass is half-full” person. A new study from the University of Kentucky in Lexington found that optimism helps your body fight off cold and flu viruses. The immune systems of volunteers responded more aggressively to germs injected into their skin on days when they felt more hopeful…and less so when their moods were more pessimistic.

You may be stressed because your best friend is stressed. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, emotions are contagious. And if your best friend is going through a hard time and stressing out about it, you’ll absorb those feelings. It happens because our brain is hardwired to empathize with others, and to imitate the emotions around us.

That’s a combination of hungry + angry.

And we’re more likely to feel angry when we’re hungry, like a cranky baby.

That’s because not eating for a while can cause levels of the happy hormone seratonin to drop, which makes it more difficult to regulate our emotions. So to stay on an even keel, never get to the point where you’re absolutely famished.

Stress is the emotion that drives us to overeat the most!

Here are 3 tricks to combat the urge from the book “The Hunger Fix” by medical professor, Dr. Pamela Peeke:

1. Chew sugarless gum. It triggers the release of serotonin, one of our feel-good chemicals. Which soothes stress.

2. Don’t work against your stress and start a diet plan on a Monday. You’re stressed out enough as it is at the beginning of the workweek. Instead, start your diet on a day off – like Saturday.

3. Create a visual reminder of your goal. Maybe it’s a picture of an outfit you want to wear, or a vacation you want to go on. But having a visual reminder of your goal on your fridge, computer, or phone can be the stop sign you need to see before reaching for a snack.

Women who avoid conflict with their spouses by keeping their feelings bottled up are 4 times more likely to die from ANY cause than women who express their feelings. That’s because emotional strain wears you down mentally and physically.
