According to the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, yes! In fact, so many people are getting cut slicing avocados in a cupped hand, ER doctors call it “avocado hand.” And just one slip of the knife can damage tendons and nerves, requiring surgery and months to heal. Even then, some people never fully regain use of their hand.

So how can you avoid injury? Slice avocados on a cutting board. If you DO get cut, plastic surgeon Dr. Sheel Sharma says put pressure on the wound and raise your arm above your head. If the bleeding won’t stop, you can’t bend your finger, or you feel numbness – which is a sign of nerve damage – head to your local ER.

We’ve all done it a million times – but ER doctors say we need to STOP trying to catch the elevator after the doors start closing. The reason? Because if you wave your arm or leg above or below the sensor, or the sensor isn’t working, the doors will close anyway. And elevators actually have four doors. Two on the elevator itself, and two on the floor you’re on. Meaning, it’ll catch your arm or leg twice, making it twice as tricky to get it out. And once the elevator starts to move, it can crush, twist, or even amputate whatever limb is stuck in the doors. Bottom line: You’re better off waiting for the next elevator, or swinging something less vital across the sensor, like your handbag or shopping bag.

You know those trampoline parks that are opening all over the place, with wall-to-wall trampolines? Approximately 6 new ones open each month! But they’re a hotbed of injuries! That’s according to data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Last year alone, nearly 7-thousand kids wound up in the emergency room due to trampoline parks. And in the last 5 years – since trampoline parks started becoming a “thing” – the injury rate has risen 12-fold! Now, backyard trampolines are still the biggest risk… with over 90-thousand injuries in a single year and 92% of those injuries are among kids, age 16 and younger. That’s why ER physician Dr. Katherine Van Zandt says parents need to be more aware. She says, most parents have no idea how often trampoline injuries occur – and how severe they are. Trauma expert Dr. Craig Cook says trampoline injuries are often similar to what you’d see in a high-speed car crash. And 75% of injuries occur when at least two people are jumping on the same trampoline.

Also, if there’s a size difference – like an adult and a child – the smaller person is 14 times more likely to be significantly hurt than the larger one. Something to consider before you put a trampoline in your backyard or send your kid to another birthday party at a trampoline park.

Check the grill first to make sure there are no metal bristles from a wire grill brush stuck in the crevices. Otherwise, the wires could end up in whatever you cook. In fact, about 150 people end up in the ER every year after swallowing metal fragments at a barbecue – which can perforate the intestine, and require life-saving surgery. So, make sure you rinse the grill thoroughly. Or avoid the problem altogether, by using a brush made of plastic.

…DON’T feed them to your dogs. They can cause broken teeth, mouth and tongue injuries and constipation. Plus, sharp bone fragments can get stuck in a dog’s esophagus or stomach, requiring surgery. And if bone fragments poke holes in a dog’s stomach or intestines, it can cause a severe abdominal bacterial infection – which will require an emergency visit to your vet, because it can kill your dog.

What won’t you find at the home of Dr. Seth Podolsky? He’s vice chair of the Cleveland Clinic Emergency Services Institute. And he says having these two things at your home is a recipe for disaster: Power washers and extension ladders. He says his ER team regularly treats patients for head trauma and collapsed lungs after they’ve fallen off really high ladders. And what’s up with power washers? The high-speed, powerful spray can easily cause lacerations and penetrating injuries from the jet of water itself, and any debris it might dislodge, like rocks and paint chips that shoot out like bullets.

So you’re cleaning your gutters and accidentally disturbed a beehive – or a hornets’ nest… According to “The Big Book Of Uncommon Knowledge” – don’t try swatting them away – or running in a zigzag pattern, thinking you’ll escape. Instead, pull your shirt over your head and run in a straight line as fast as you can – into the wind, if possible… Because a stiff breeze will slow the bees down. They’ll usually give up before you reach shelter. But if you’ve been stung 15 times or more, or feel sick, get to the ER.

Know this: A new study found it’s not always the biggest and fastest rides we should worry about. More kids get hurt on smaller rides – and there are about 20 injuries a day, totaling over 4‑thousand a year. So which rides account for the most trips to the ER?

Bumper cars: 4% of injuries.
Roller coasters: 10%.
But carousels account for 21%!

Which explains why one-third of all kids injured are typically five, or younger. Something to keep in mind for your next trip to the amusement park.

If you’re not counting calories during the holidays, doctors say you should at least watch your salt intake. Because hospitals see a lot of heart patients between Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas. Most of the time it’s because of too much salt in holiday meals. Salt can be very dangerous because it promotes water retention, which can be fatal for anyone with a weak heart. To avoid a trip to the Emergency Room, instead of flavoring your holiday dishes with salt, use herbs, spices and other natural flavorings.

Be careful trimming your Christmas tree! According to the CDC, nearly 6,000 people in the US are treated every year in emergency rooms for falls that occur while putting decorations on Christmas trees. So make sure your ladder is secure and stable before putting the star on top of the tree.
