Which is worse: Eating too much at a party – or drinking too much? Even if you’re not driving, drinking too much is a LOT worse. That’s according to registered dietician Stephanie Middleberg. She says, aside from possibly doing things you’ll regret, because drinking impairs your judgment, it also weakens your immune system. So you’re more likely to pick up an infection. Drinking too much at a party will also ruin your sleep. Sure you may sleep heavily at first, but once your body metabolizes the alcohol, your brain will wake up, causing restless sleep. Plus, drinking increases hunger for high-fat foods. So you may end up eating too much anyway. Bottom line: It’s best to limit your food and your alcohol intake at a party.

That’s the gist of research by the Mayo Clinic. Which found that night owls eat about 550 extra calories a day – mostly junk food between the hours of 10PM and 4AM. That’s because night owls tend to sleep about 80 minutes less per night than early birds… which messes with their hunger and “I’m full” hormones – making them more likely to overeat.

Here’s the 5-second test to know whether you’re eating because you’re truly hungry – or for emotional reasons. Simply ask yourself: “Am I hungry enough to eat steamed salmon right now?” If that doesn’t sound appealing, you’ve got a craving, not true hunger. That comes from nutritionist Melissa Hartwig. She says, since a boring protein doesn’t satisfy our typical cravings for sweet, salty or savory, it’s a dead giveaway. And if it IS just a craving, sip a mug of hot tea instead, which can help suppress the urge to eat.

Eating behind the wheel on a regular basis significantly raises your risk of getting sick. That’s according to microbiologist Dr. Anthony Hilton from Aston University. He says the average family car is teeming with the germs that cause food poisoning. And the germiest places are the steering wheel, gearshift, and door handles. So, Dr. Hilton recommends cleaning everything in the car that anyone could have touched with a disinfecting wipe at least once a week.

Beware of going to dinner with a fast eater.
We tend to match the speed of whoever’s across the table. But inhaling food too quickly leads to overeating. However, just being aware of this effect can help us slow down, and slim down.

If you’re about to chomp into something delicious, cut it up first.

cut-up-chocolate Whether it’s a bagel, a slice of pizza, or breaking a chocolate bar into pieces. You’ll automatically want to eat less. That’s according to the University of Arizona. Researchers found that the optical illusion of seeing the food in pieces, makes us feel like there’s more to eat, than just seeing one big piece. So, we’ll feel satisfied sooner and eat less.
