Forget about trying a little of “the hair of the dog that bit you.” That old adage can be dated back to Medieval times, when it was a treatment for rabies! And doctors believed that literally stuffing the bite wound with hair from the rabid dog would help patients recover. It didn’t work then – and the drinking equivalent won’t cure a hangover now. According to the Mayo Clinic, a hangover occurs once you’ve stopped drinking, and the liver is finally able to quickly lower your blood alcohol levels… Triggering symptoms that can include headache, thirst, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. You can feel better with rest, hydration, and aspirin. But doctors say the only real cure is time. So don’t bother drinking a Bloody Mary after a rough night. Quoting the Mayo Clinic experts here: “The hair of the dog that bit you” won’t work.

…do this when you get up in the morning: Have a cup of coffee and a splash of hot sauce on your breakfast. The plant compounds in coffee – and the capsaicin in hot sauce – can help detox your liver. That’s according to the World Cancer Research Fund. Even better, put hot sauce or chili flakes on avocado toast. The avocado has potassium and magnesium, two minerals that alcohol drains from your system.

Drinking alcohol isn’t necessarily going to make you gain weight…

…as long as you drink in moderation. That’s according to Harvard University researchers. They found that study participants were only likely to gain weight if they consumed more than 3 drinks a day. And those who drank liquor were more likely to gain weight than those who preferred wine. Even though a serving of wine has about the same number of calories as a serving of liquor. The reason? Because most people drink hard liquor with mixers and flavored syrups – which are packed with sugar and calories. And that can turn a 100-calorie shot into a 500-plus calorie margarita or mai-tai.

Which is worse: Eating too much at a party – or drinking too much? Even if you’re not driving, drinking too much is a LOT worse. That’s according to registered dietician Stephanie Middleberg. She says, aside from possibly doing things you’ll regret, because drinking impairs your judgment, it also weakens your immune system. So you’re more likely to pick up an infection. Drinking too much at a party will also ruin your sleep. Sure you may sleep heavily at first, but once your body metabolizes the alcohol, your brain will wake up, causing restless sleep. Plus, drinking increases hunger for high-fat foods. So you may end up eating too much anyway. Bottom line: It’s best to limit your food and your alcohol intake at a party.

According to a recent study at the University of Missouri, more than half of all women claim they skip meals so they don’t consume too many calories on days when they know they’ll be drinking. Literally, 50% of women are saving up so they can drink their calories in alcohol. And it’s not just for special occasions – but, quote, “all the time.” But nutritionists warn that swapping alcohol calories for food calories can actually starve your body of essential vitamins, which can lead to serious deficiencies. In fact, it’s not even smart for weight loss. Dr. Caroline Cederquist is a weight management expert – and she says skipping just one meal slows down your metabolism. Also, any food you eat with your alcohol is more likely to be stored as fat. That’s because the body considers alcohol a toxin, so it metabolizes it FIRST, leaving unburned food calories to be stored as fat. So, on the days you’re going out with friends, Dr. Cederquist says eat normally – and choose a lower-calorie alcoholic beverage… like light beer, or a wine-spritzer.

If you prefer white wine, chances are you may drink more of it than you intended to. A study at Iowa State University found that when people pour white wine into a clear glass, they pour 9 percent more than people who drink red wine. Why? Because white wine blends in with the glass, causing drinkers to pour more than they realize.

If you’re a procrastinator, this may motivate you to change your ways: You’re more likely to develop heart disease. That’s according to the Journal of Behavioral Medicine. Researchers found that people who procrastinate take more health risks, like smoking and drinking… They also have chronic stress – because they’re always worried about what they’re NOT getting done. Put those two together and you have a recipe for inflammation and heart disease. So get your to-do’s handled… And you’ll be a lot healthier mentally and physically.

If you’re juicing and drinking smoothies – you may also feel like you’re starving all the time!

Here’s why, according to registered dietitian Beth Warren:
First: It’s because you’re not chewing anything. Liquid calories mess with the way we register fullness. Because chewing activates part of the digestive process. So if you’re sipping berries through a straw, you won’t have the same feeling of being satisfied as when you actually chew berries.
Also, we can drink faster than we can eat… Again, because there’s no chewing. But when we consume something faster, the brain doesn’t have time to register the “I’m full” signal. So you don’t feel full.

Here are three lifestyle changes cardiologist, Dr. Mehmet Oz swears by.

If you adopt these, you’ll improve your life in just two weeks.

Dr. Oz’s first tip: Don’t pamper a bad back! Even if you’re in agony, staying in bed all day will only make it worse. Why? Because bed rest weakens muscles and prolongs your suffering. And get this! Married men suffer more than single men because their wives pamper them! The best solution is to take a pain reliever, get up, and get moving.

Tip #2: Don’t be an island. One major reason why women live longer than men is because they have more close friends and talk about what’s on their minds. If you face life’s stresses alone, you’ll make yourself old before your time.

#3: Save some money. That doesn’t sound like a health tip… But Dr. Oz says most people rank personal finance as their #1 stressor, usually because they feel powerless over the situation. But stress not only shortens your life, it drives people to bad habits like smoking, drinking and overeating. So take control. Keep some money in an account you NEVER touch. You’ll have money in the bank and an emotional comfort zone with major health benefits.
