Which is worse… Drinking coffee through a straw or from a cup?

Believe it or not, sipping through a straw is worse. A lot of people do it so they won’t stain their teeth. But dermatologist Carolyn Jacob says, the coffee is going to swirl around your teeth anyway. But the straw can cause lip wrinkles. That’s because repetitive movements, like pursing your mouth, break down collagen – which is what keeps skin firm. So drink from the cup instead – wait 30 minutes for your tooth enamel to re-harden, and then brush or chew sugarless gum to prevent stains.

If skipping your morning coffee makes you feel grumpy, or even depressed, it’s not your imagination. Research from the Harvard School of Public Health found drinking 2 to 4 cups of caffeinated coffee improves mood. It can reduce the risk of depression by 20%, and cuts the risk of suicide in half! The researchers say caffeine acts as a mild antidepressant by boosting production of feel-good neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline.

It makes sense. Harvard School of Public Health researchers found drinking 4 cups of regular coffee a day can reduce our risk of depression by 20%. That’s compared to people consuming caffeinated tea, soft drinks, energy drinks, or chocolate. Researchers aren’t exactly sure why caffeinated coffee is the best mood booster. But the Mayo Clinic says 400 milligrams of caffeine – about what’s in 4 cups of brewed coffee – is considered safe for most adults.

Don’t reheat your to-go cup of coffee in the microwave until you transfer it to a ceramic mug. The Environmental Working Group says a lot of paper to-go cups are lined with a chemical that may release harmful compounds when microwaved. And doing that a lot could mess with your hormone levels. So if you find yourself reheating your to-go coffee every day – pour it into a mug first, just to be safe.

Try coffee to detox – from decaf to espresso. Because, according to studies on 19,000 people – coffee protects the liver. And people who drink 3 cups a day have lower enzyme levels in their blood that can indicate liver problems. That’s because coffee contains antioxidants that detoxify the liver and prevent damage.

You don’t have to drink coffee to get energized. Just stand near the coffeemaker while it’s brewing. Because coffee is one of the most stimulating scents for our brain. The scent of coffee beans contain compounds that activate genes that help wake us up and lower our stress…Without taking a sip.

Coffee may be better for us than we realized.

That’s because the more coffee we drink, the more it seems to lower our risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Harvard University researchers analyzed 28 studies with more than a million total participants… And discovered that people who drank six cups of coffee a day cut their risk of diabetes by a‑third. The good news is, we don’t have to drink that much to get the benefits. Because each cup of coffee lowers our diabetes risk by about 9%. And decaffeinated coffee works, too. Researchers believe it’s because the health benefits come from chlorogenic acid… A naturally-occurring chemical in coffee that slows the ability of our intestines to absorb glucose – which helps smooth out blood sugar levels.

Here’s something to think about next time you have a cup of coffee.

If you love coffee, know this: Wait 30 minutes after drinking it before brushing your teeth! That’s because the acid in the coffee weakens tooth enamel. And if you brush immediately afterward, you’ll damage your teeth even more. That’s according to the Mayo Clinic.
