Got a hangover?

Forget about trying a little of “the hair of the dog that bit you.” That old adage can be dated back to Medieval times, when it was a treatment for rabies! And doctors believed that literally stuffing the bite wound with hair from the rabid dog would help patients recover. It didn’t work then – and the drinking equivalent won’t cure a hangover now. According to the Mayo Clinic, a hangover occurs once you’ve stopped drinking, and the liver is finally able to quickly lower your blood alcohol levels… Triggering symptoms that can include headache, thirst, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. You can feel better with rest, hydration, and aspirin. But doctors say the only real cure is time. So don’t bother drinking a Bloody Mary after a rough night. Quoting the Mayo Clinic experts here: “The hair of the dog that bit you” won’t work.

That’s according to Dr. Gary Paige from the University of Rochester Balance Clinic. The cups spin and rotate for 90 seconds, while your inner ear tries to make sense of the movement. Except for ballerinas and figure skaters, it’s not a sensation we’ve adapted to, so it confuses our brain’s sense of orientation. If your kid demands you go along for the ride, do this: Close your eyes. Because vision will make your nausea worse. And when the ride is over, sit there for a minute before you get up. That allows your brain and inner ear to come to a full and complete stop, so you’ll be less likely to fall over when you stand up… and less likely to lose your lunch.

Why do we get sleepy and gassy on airplanes?

Blame it on the air pressure. At cruising altitude, our blood absorbs less oxygen, which can make us sleepy, dizzy, and mentally fuzzy. So, get up every hour and do a couple deep knee bends or lunges to boost the oxygen in your blood. And eat spinach, which has B‑vitamins that boost the supply of oxygen-rich red blood cells to your brain and muscles. And getting gassy on a plane is also due to reduced air pressure. It causes gas to expand in the body. So avoid carbonated beverages and high-fiber foods, which will increase that gas even more.

If you’ve ever stood up too quickly and felt lightheaded, you have. It’s the technical term for a head-rush! And it’s a form of low blood pressure that happens when you stand up after being seated or lying down for a while. So what can you do if you’re prone to head-rushes? Do what fighter pilots do and clench the muscles in your lower body to push blood back into your upper body.
Fighter pilots can experience a head-rush and even black out if they’re doing G-force maneuvers that exert extreme gravitational force on the body. And when that happens, it’s harder for blood to pump its way around the body, the brain doesn’t get the oxygen it needs, and you pass out. The way Air Force pilots combat this is by clenching the muscles in the lower body, starting with the calves, then thighs, then the abs and lower back. This squeezes blood back up in to your upper body, and you’ll feel normal almost instantly.

Do we really need to cool down after a workout?

cool-down-wp

Yes, but NOT because it helps our body recover faster. It’s because doing a cool-down makes us ENJOY our workout more. Kinesiologists from Iowa State University say people who do a cool-down remember their workouts as more pleasant than exercisers who don’t cool down. And it makes them more likely to continue working out. That’s because we tend to remember the LAST part of an experience more vividly than any other part. So if the last section of our workout was a feel-good cool-down session, we’ll think the ENTIRE workout was more pleasant. So what about any physical benefits? Well, doing a cool-down – say by walking after a run – can reduce the chances of dizziness or fainting. Because blood tends to pool in our lower extremities if we work out hard, and then stop cold. So spend 5 to 10 minutes doing an easier version of your workout – or some simple stretches – to get the mental and physical benefits.

If you’re prone to dizziness or vertigo – take up tai chi.

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary says patients who practiced tai chi for 2 months, had improved symptoms. It works through a combination of improved balance, cardiovascular function and more stable walking. And even if you don’t have problems with dizziness, tai chi is recommended by the National Institutes of Health for everyone from cancer survivors, to patients battling fibromyalgia, to people with chronic heart failure and depression. Because it improves muscle tone, balance, and reduces pain.

Be aware of how much your kids are exercising this summer. Young athletes are at risk of dehydration in hot, humid weather. An emergency room physician from the Cleveland Clinic says not getting enough water can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Kids should be familiar with the signs they’re becoming dehydrated.

If they feel a Charlie horse in their legs, tingling fingers, dizziness, light-headedness, or cramps that won’t go away – those are all signs they aren’t getting enough water and are losing electrolytes. Kids produce more heat and sweat less than adults do. And they’re also less likely to drink enough water while exercising outside. So make sure your kids stay hydrated.

Try this…Find a rubber ball, or a tennis ball, and squeeze it in your hand. Or if you’re on the verge of passing out, cross your ankles and clench your thighs at the same time. Research shows that tensing our muscles immediately boosts blood flow. And that allows more oxygen to reach your head, where it can stop wooziness in its tracks…
