…try a 13-hour food fast every night. Meaning, take a 13-hour break between dinner and breakfast the next morning. According to nutritional researcher, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, giving your body that break helps lower blood pressure. Because, when we’re not eating or digesting, the body does a better job of healing and repairing itself – and that goes for relaxing blood vessels, too. So eat dinner a little earlier – like 7pm… and don’t have breakfast until 8am.

Because the more we wonder, “Hmmmm, what am I gonna have?…” the more we tend to indulge.

So says Dr. Mehmet Oz. He says, even a couple seconds of decision-making can override our willpower. That’s why he says it’s best to stick to a set breakfast and lunch – and eat the same thing day in and day out. And if you can stick to that, you can have more leeway with dinner.

But even with dinner, it’s best to have a rotation of three or four ideas. That’ll keep you from getting bored and provide a wider range of nutrients – but you won’t have SO MUCH choice that your diet goes off the rails.

We’ve heard that eating at night leads to weight gain… even if you’re not eating any more than you normally do. So why is that? According to the Autonomous University of Chile, it’s because our bodies have adapted to burn more energy during the day. So as the sun sets, our metabolism naturally slows down, helping us prepare for sleep. That means we’re not processing food as efficiently. And in a study of 5,000 people, those who ate after 8pm had waists that were two inches bigger – even though they ate the same number of calories, and had the same activity levels as those who ate earlier in the day.

Did you down a greasy bacon-and-egg breakfast, or a fried chicken dinner?
Then take a walk! Indiana University researchers found that a half-hour stroll after a fatty meal not only reverses the short-term damage to your arteries, but it also causes them to work better than they did before the feast!
However, this is not an excuse to eat fatty foods all the time!

Eat at the same time every day! People who don’t sleep well have a body clock that’s out of sync. But when your food intake is on a set schedule, it helps set your body clock. Your body and brain will know when to anticipate sleep each night and automatically start relaxing. As a bonus: Sleeping better will reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s. According to the American Medical Association, people who get a solid 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night have less of the plaque buildup in the brain that’s linked to Alzheimer’s.

Well, if you’re trying to lose weight, take your lunch break at exactly 12:38 pm. According to a new survey of 1,000 dieters, that’s the optimal time when dieters generally lost the most weight. And the survey goes on to say the best time to eat breakfast is at precisely 7:11 am… and the best time to eat dinner is 6:14 pm. That way you’re fasting for 12 hours – which helps your body use the calories you consume, instead of storing them as fat.

Beware of going to dinner with a fast eater.
We tend to match the speed of whoever’s across the table. But inhaling food too quickly leads to overeating. However, just being aware of this effect can help us slow down, and slim down.

Should you take your leftovers with you or leave them behind?

doggie bag to go-wp

Let’s say you went out to dinner and a movie…But you left your doggie bag from dinner in the car. Well, toss those leftovers in the trash when you get home! Your risk of a food-borne illness starts rising once food has been out more than 2 hours. And if the movie is 90-minutes – add in 15 minutes of previews – and the time it took for you to get from the restaurant to the movie theater…And then from the movie theater back home. All-in-all, the leftovers in your car have been sitting for more than 3 hours. Hello, food poisoning!

If you go straight home after dinner, your leftovers are fine. If not, don’t bother asking for a doggie bag.

Here’s a 4-step plan to enjoy your next restaurant meal while keeping your calories in check.

If you have to wait for a table – wait outside! Watching everyone chow down while you stand around makes you eat more! That’s because, while you’re waiting, you’re seeing and smelling food – and that stimulates your appetite. It even readies your digestive process!

Then, take a bathroom break right after you’re seated. After a crazy day at work, you’ll be downing margaritas and mozzarella sticks before you open the menu. Because when we’re frazzled, our instincts tell us to reach for high-fat comfort foods to soothe ourselves. That’s according to the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. But taking a minute away from the table for deep breathing tricks the brain into thinking you’re relaxed – and when you’re calm, you’ll make better food choices.

Step 3: Know how to read the menu. “Succulent herb-crusted pork chops” sound good right? Well, the more descriptive the menu item is, the more likely we are to order it! And adjectives like “sizzling, creamy, rich and juicy” literally make our mouths water! But you’re less likely to be influenced just knowing this information.

The last step: Don’t order your dressing on the side! The serving of dressing the restaurant would normally put on your salad may look skimpy served separately, so they’ll send out more. That could add up to 200 more calories!

Here’s a tip to make tonight’s dinner even healthier:

Don’t cut your vegetables before you cook them.

Scientists found that potatoes retain 50% more potassium when cooked whole, than when they’re chopped up. And carrots hang onto 25% more cancer-fighting compounds when cooked whole. And as a bonus, your food will taste better! According to researchers at Newcastle University in the UK, cutting vegetables into pieces before cooking them means that compounds such as sugars and acids leach into the water – which causes them to lose flavor.
