First of all, research shows 95% of women admit they’ve withheld information from loved ones AND lied to someone close to them. But even the lies we consider harmless – like, ‘Yes, I love your meatloaf!’ – can cause anxiety and body aches… especially if you feel guilty about lying. Dr. Deirdre Fitzgerald is a professor of behavior analysis at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. And she says, even lies to save face – or save someone else from embarrassment – can weaken the immune system, causing headaches, back pain, and yes, diarrhea.

Actually two reasons. The first is the fiber. Kale has the insoluble kind, which means it doesn’t break down – it passes right through you. The other reason is a carbohydrate it contains called raffinose. Our bodies can’t break that down either during digestion. That’s according to the Johns Hopkins Digestive Center. Instead, the fiber and raffinose go straight to your colon where they ferment and send you running for the restroom. So lay off the kale if you won’t be near a bathroom for a while – or you’re on a date.

If you have stomach cramps or diarrhea, eat a cup of fresh or frozen raspberries. The Journal of Applied Microbiology says raspberries have antimicrobial compounds. That’ll slow the growth of the salmonella or staph bacteria in your intestines causing your discomfort.

Here are two reasons to get the first doctor’s appointment of the day:

You’ll be seen on time, since your doctor hasn’t had other patients to delay her… Plus, you’ll be less likely to be prescribed unnecessary antibiotics. Dr. Jeffrey Linder from Brigham and Women’s Hospital did the research… and he found that primary care doctors are nearly 30% more likely to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics toward the end of the day. Because they’re wiped out by then – and it’s easier to give a quick fix and send patients on their way. But if you can’t get an early appointment, ask your doctor if the pills are really necessary. Because half of all antibiotics prescribed AREN’T. And when we take antibiotics too often, we risk becoming vulnerable to antibiotic-resistant bacteria – and overuse of antibiotics can lead to diarrhea, rashes, and yeast infections.

Here are two ways:

• In England, the go-to for an upset stomach is peppermint tea. It relieves cramps and constipation by relaxing the muscles from the esophagus on down. Just don’t use it if you have heartburn. Because that relaxing effect can allow acid to splash back up.

• And in Indonesia, they reach for nutmeg. Try sprinkling half a teaspoon on mashed banana, or mixing it in yogurt. Nutmeg is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory – and calms stomachaches, spasms and diarrhea.

If you plan on hitting the beach, beware of the sand!

Researchers at the University of North Carolina found that digging in the sand raises the risk of diarrhea by 27%. For kids under age 11, that number jumps to 44%.

Other studies have found high levels of E. coli bacteria in the top 8 inches of sand. In fact, levels can be almost 40 times those found in the water at the same beaches.

The contamination may come from storm sewer runoff, or from the feces left by birds or other animals. And once the germs are there, the sand provides a moist environment for the bacteria to rapidly reproduce.

To stay safe, use hand sanitizer after playing in the sand or water, until you can get to a bathroom to wash your hands with soap and fresh water.

Even if your smartphone looks spotless, it could be plastered with bacteria that can cause everything from the flu to pinkeye to diarrhea. All those germs are just a finger swipe away because of the phone’s proximity to our hands, nose, and mouth.

That’s according to the Medical University of South Carolina.

Now, you may say – well, the same goes for anything we touch and hold. But here’s what makes the difference……We take our phones everywhere – from restaurants, to the bathroom, to setting them on the elliptical machine at the gym. And although we may wash our hands, we typically don’t wipe down our phones after each activity. And that greasy smear from the dinner table feeds those microbes even more.

So, how bad is it? When the researchers swabbed volunteers’ phones, every single one had sky high levels of coliform – that’s bacteria from waste matter! That means, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians, people are just as likely to get sick from their phones as from bathroom door handles.

So what’s the best cleaning method? A soft, lint-free cloth with rubbing alcohol is best, removing nearly 100% of the bacteria.

In a study, 100% of bags swabbed and tested were contaminated with harmful bacteria.

So what are the two dirtiest parts? The handle and the bottom. So don’t rest your bag on any surface on which you prepare or eat food. And, wash your hands after carrying your handbag, before you eat, or touch your nose, mouth or eyes.
