During the summer, we all spend more time outdoors in the hot sun, making us more likely to get dehydrated. Symptoms of dehydration include feeling tired, dizzy and thirsty. If that describes you, drink a glass of MILK – either dairy or soy – as soon as possible. According to the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism, milk will rehydrate you faster than drinking water or a sports beverage. The reason? Because milk replaces fluid lost to sweat AND at the same time replenishes sodium, carbs and protein, which our body needs to operate properly. Again – the quickest way to get properly rehydrated is to drink a glass of soy or dairy milk, ASAP.

It turns out there is!

We shouldn’t chug it… we should sip it. That’s according to Dr. Leonard Smith, a gastrointestinal and vascular surgeon. He says chugging water won’t kill you, obviously, but you’ll eliminate it more quickly, which defeats the purpose because it will leave you dehydrated. Instead, Dr. Smith recommends sipping water slowly, two to three ounces at a time, throughout the day. And two or three ounces is not a lot. It’s about as much liquid as in a standard perfume bottle, or the amount you could pour into a standard spice jar. If you drink a lot of water at once, you’ll end up running to the bathroom all the time and it won’t keep you steadily hydrated, like sipping.

Drink at least 5 glasses of water a day! Research from Loma Linda University found that’ll lower your heart disease risk by almost 60%. That’s a drop similar to stopping smoking, exercising more, or maintaining a healthy weight. Why is water crucial? Researcher Dr. Chan Knutsen says dehydration thickens blood, and stresses your heart. Meanwhile, water reduces blood viscosity, meaning it thins the blood, so it pumps more smoothly through your arteries.

When shaving your legs, use baby oil, coconut oil or argan oil – not shaving cream. Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe says the chemicals in aerosol creams can dehydrate the skin. But baby oil is hydrating. Plus, it makes hairs swell – so you’ll get a closer shave. You’ll also reduce the buildup of dead skin cells, so they won’t clog pores and contribute to ingrown hairs. One more benefit? Oil allows the razor to move more easily, so you reduce the risk of razor burn. So try baby oil instead of shaving cream.

How do I know? Because if your child is between age 6 and 19, there’s a 50/50 chance he or she is dehydrated. That’s according to a study conducted by Harvard scientists, who analyzed 4,000 kids.
And they found that nearly 55% of them were “inadequately” hydrated, with boys being more at risk than girls. Erica Kenney led the study for the Harvard School of Public Health – and she says, this doesn’t mean that kids are dropping like flies or need to go to the hospital. But even slight dehydration can negatively affect a child’s mood, energy level, and ability to learn – and can lead to headaches and irritability. And kids are more prone to dehydration than adults. That’s because their thirst mechanism isn’t fully developed, so they often don’t feel thirsty until they’re in the early stages of dehydration.

Here’s an easy way to improve your life:

Drink more water. Nutritionist Dr. Grace Webb says 75% of us are chronically dehydrated. And it doesn’t take much to get to that point – losing just 1.5% of the water in our body will do it! Here are a few other reasons to drink more water:

•It’ll tame your sweet tooth. Cardiologist Dr. John Higgins says that your liver needs water to transform stored energy into the sugars that fuel your cells. And being just a few ounces short disrupts that process, and makes us crave sugar from other sources – like candy and donuts.

•Drinking more water also reduces aches and pains. According to the Mayo Clinic, our bodies need a minimum of 8 cups a day to operate efficiently. Less than that, and our electrolyte levels get out of whack and our blood gets thicker, and flows more slowly, making our heart work harder. Which leads to headaches, constipation, and muscle pain.

•Finally: More water equals safer road trips. A study in the journal Physiology and Behavior shows that being dehydrated will literally double your risk of an accident while driving. That’s because it throws off the balance of important brain neurotransmitters and gives us the reaction time of a drunk driver.

Be aware of how much your kids are exercising this summer. Young athletes are at risk of dehydration in hot, humid weather. An emergency room physician from the Cleveland Clinic says not getting enough water can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Kids should be familiar with the signs they’re becoming dehydrated.

If they feel a Charlie horse in their legs, tingling fingers, dizziness, light-headedness, or cramps that won’t go away – those are all signs they aren’t getting enough water and are losing electrolytes. Kids produce more heat and sweat less than adults do. And they’re also less likely to drink enough water while exercising outside. So make sure your kids stay hydrated.

The most energizing thing you can drink in the morning ISN’T coffee.

It’s water with lemon! We dehydrate overnight – and even slight dehydration drains our energy. So, drinking water in the morning will perk you up – and the scent of lemon triggers neurotransmitters in the brain that increase alertness.
