Got-a-cough-Eat-some-dark-chocolate-wp

Eat some dark chocolate! Research from the UK’s University of Hull shows it quells coughs better than over-the-counter syrups… and dark chocolate suppresses coughs better than codeine!

Lead researcher Dr. Alyn Morice says patients given cocoa-infused meds saw their cough significantly improve in 2 days. Because chocolate is stickier than cough syrup, so it’s better at coating the nerve endings that trigger a cough. Plus, the theobromine in dark chocolate cuts brain activity linked to the cough reflex. And 2 squares of dark, bittersweet chocolate will do the trick.

We know that coughing and sneezing spreads germs. Now, researchers say, so do singing, whistling and laughing!

Virologists at Singapore’s National University Hospital say singing produces an even stronger, “more penetrating plume of infection” than coughing. How do they know? Because the researchers used a gigantic mirror and high-speed camera to watch the splatter of saliva… and they figured out exactly how far those flu droplets flew when someone was singing!

So what’s the point of this research? Researchers can apply it to how far apart hospital beds need to be to prevent airborne infection. But for us, we should steer clear of strangers who are whistling on their way to work – and maybe avoid close contact with singers on karaoke night! Keep a minimum distance of 20 feet… and know that viral droplets can stay suspended in the air for up to 10 minutes.

Thyme!

It’s an inexpensive, natural cough remedy. Thyme has plant compounds that reduce the inflammation of a sore throat and relax throat muscles, so you don’t cough as much.

So try this: Add 1 teaspoon dried thyme or 2 teaspoons of fresh thyme to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, strain, add honey for even more cough-suppressing power – and sip!

If you’ve got a cold, I’ve got you covered. These are the best foods to eat – because they act like natural remedies for your symptoms.

First: For a cough, try 2 teaspoons of honey. Research in the journal Pediatrics shows honey can relieve coughs from upper respiratory infections – even BETTER than over-the-counter medicines. Honey coats the throat and has anti-microbial properties to kill infections. It also has antioxidants that boost the immune system. And it can be eaten straight from the jar, or in a cup of hot tea.

Next: If you feel headachy, eat a banana. They’re high in the pain-fighting electrolyte magnesium. And according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, people prone to headaches – including migraines – often have low levels of magnesium.

Also: If you’re feeling stuffed up: Try pineapple and chili peppers. Pineapple contains bromelain, which thins mucus… And chili peppers trigger a so-called mucokinetic effect that helps sinuses drain. It’s the capsaicin – which makes your nose run and eyes tear, but it thins mucus at the same time.

One final natural remedy for a cold: Pumpkin seeds. According to the Mayo Clinic, they’re packed with zinc. !’ve talked about the healing power of zinc many times before: Zinc keeps cold viruses from replicating in your body.

Have you ever choked on something, or had a coughing fit and said, “Something went down the wrong pipe!” That’s actually a fairly accurate expression, according to pulmonary specialist, Dr. Richard Wunderink. He says we have two tubes that start at the back of our throat… One is the esophagus that leads to our stomach. The other is our trachea, which goes to our lungs. And if a sip of something accidentally goes down your trachea, you start sputtering and choking to get rid of it. To prevent that from happening, simply take smaller sips.

If you have to cough – cough! Don’t hold back. Because doing so constricts your throat muscles, making them even more irritated. Then, when you do cough, it’ll be even worse and more painful. So just like with a sneeze – don’t stifle a cough.

I’m talking about honey. It calms a cough MORE effectively than the active ingredient in most over-the-counter medicines. That’s according to Penn State researchers. One reason? The nerves that stimulate coughing interact with the brain regions that detect sweetness. So, the taste of honey may calm the part of the brain that makes you cough. Another reason? Honey is thick, so it coats your throat. Plus, it has antibacterial properties to kill germs in your throat. The prescription dose? Swallow 2 teaspoons every 4 to 5 hours during the day – and a half hour before you go to bed.

Trade your cough drops for a cup of ginger tea.

The compounds that give ginger its spicy flavor are more effective at suppressing coughs than over-the-counter cough medicines. To make your own: Grate a piece of ginger as big as your thumb into a mug, top with boiling water. Steep it for 5 minutes, strain it, and sweeten it to taste with honey. You can also squeeze a lemon wedge into the cup if you’d like. Enjoy!

If you’re near someone who’s sick, close your mouth. Germs travel through the air. In fact, they can fly as far as 30 feet. So if you’re forced to sit near someone who’s coughing, wheezing, or sneezing, it’s better to breathe through your nose than your mouth. That’s because tiny nose hairs act as filters to keep out the germs.

Your cough may not just be a cough.

Here’s what else it could mean….

If you have a small, tickling cough, the culprit may be your blood pressure medication. For about 1 in 5 patients, a little known side-effect to those drugs is a dry, nagging cough. So ask your doctor about switching to a different type of blood pressure medication. Otherwise, ask him about adding some iron to your diet. Research shows that taking a daily iron supplement can calm a drug-related cough in as little as one month.

Also, a persistent cough could be a sign of acid reflux. Experts say about 3 out of 4 people who experience heartburn after eating also develop a cough! The #1 way to ward off acid reflux is to eat lighter meals. Otherwise, try sitting upright for at least 2 hours after a meal. Then sleep on your left side. That way, acid passes more quickly from your stomach into your intestines.
