You can use water to power through a tough workout by sticking it in the freezer first (even though it’s winter). According to exercise physiologist, Dr. Lawrence Armstrong, in a study, people who sipped icy cold water before and during a strenuous workout were able to keep going significantly longer than those who drank room-temperature water. That’s because the ice-cold water cools your core temperature.

If you’re dripping with sweat during Cross Fit, while the guy next to you seems dry… Don’t sweat it! You may actually be more fit than they are! Sports scientist Dr. Lindsay Baker says sweat is how the body cools itself when our core temperature rises. And because a fit person is better at regulating their core temperature, they start sweating sooner – and more profusely – than someone who’s not as fit. You may also be bigger than the runner NOT sweating next to you. Bigger people sweat more than smaller people, because their bodies produce more heat. That’s why men tend to sweat more than women.

Sure, it raises body temperature – so when your core temperature drops again it triggers the production of sleep hormones. But there’s an even simpler reason. It exhausts us physically! And according to the University of Pennsylvania – which studied activity patterns of nearly half a million people – those who were tired from physical exertion slept better. And averaged a good 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep. So make sure you get your 30 minutes of exercise every day.

If you catch a cold, here’s how to get over it faster: Take a hot bath. Researchers at the New York Nasal and Sinus Center found soaking for 20-minutes a day in a hot bath can shorten a cold by four days. That’s because viruses are heat-sensitive – so raising your core temperature helps kill them off faster.

Sleep specialist Dr. Cathy Goldstein says it’s worse to be too hot!
That’s because our core temperature needs to drop to trigger our sleep hormones. So if we’re too hot, our body thinks it’s not bedtime yet, so it keeps our brain alert. And if you do fall asleep when you’re too hot, you’ll miss out on slow-wave sleep – the most restorative kind. Ideally, the bedroom should be between 60 and 67 degrees. That’s the optimal temperature for sleep.

For years we’ve been told that exercise improves sleep… But we can’t work out TOO close to bedtime because our core temperature needs to drop for sleep hormones to kick in. So how late in the day can we exercise and still get the sleep benefits? Dr. Kelly Glazer Baron is a neurology professor at Northwestern University… and she says, about 3 hours before bed should be your exercise cutoff time. Within 3 months, you should be sleeping about 45 minutes longer, and getting better quality sleep. Because that’s how long it takes for the improvements in mood from exercise to have a lasting effect on sleep.

Here’s a new nighttime snack for you: Jell-O. It’s one of the best sources of glycine – an amino acid that helps our body naturally reduce our core temperature. And as you know, cooling off the body triggers our sleep hormones. Glycine also relaxes nerves and muscles and acts as a mild sedative. So have a serving of Jell-O about 2 hours before bed and you’ll sleep more deeply.

Can you sweat away pounds in a Jacuzzi or sauna?

Not exactly. Here are the facts from researchers at the University of Maryland: Let’s talk about the Jacuzzi first. Yes, it’ll raise your core temperature…But bubbling away in a hot tub for 20 minutes only burns 5 more calories than spending that time on the couch, watching TV. It will, however, improve circulation. So what about a sauna? The dry heat will sweat away a few more calories than the hot tub, but the difference is negligible.
Bottom line: Enjoy a sauna or a Jacuzzi for the relaxation benefits…But don’t count on weight loss.

You know the saying “cold hands, warm heart”…

Well, there’s science behind it.

In a chilly environment, your body re-directs blood from your arms, legs, hands and feet to your torso, to insulate your vital organs, like your heart. That’s why your fingers and toes may feel cold, but your core temperature stays normal.
