Like alcohol. According to registered dietician Keri Glassman, going dry for one month can result in a 3-pound weight loss.

Then, give up fried foods – like chips and fries – for a month, and you’ll drop up to 5 pounds. Plus, because fried foods are harder to digest, you’ll also lose bloat and heartburn.

Finally, if you only want to give up one thing to lose weight: Ditch your morning muffin. After a month you’ll be down 3 pounds. Give up cookies, too, and you’ll bring that total to 5 pounds lost.

Eating one piece of fruit could help you eat healthier all week. If you eat it right BEFORE you go grocery shopping! Researchers from Cornell University found shoppers who had eaten an apple beforehand bought 28% more produce than cookie-eaters. They also bought less junk food. The explanation is simple: Once you eat a healthy snack, your subconscious guides you to STAY on a healthy path, with almost zero effort. But remember, the trick only works if you eat fruit right BEFORE you shop.

When it’s time for dessert – choose something round… Like a cookie, flan or crème brulée in a ramekin. Research shows our brain finds round desserts sweeter, with an overall better flavor. So even if you’re making homemade cookies, use a cookie cutter. You’ll enjoy the cookies more – and that’ll help you eat fewer of them. Because your brain will be more satisfied.

Cornell University found that people ate TWICE as many cookies in a messy kitchen, compared to a tidy one. That’s because visual clutter raises our stress levels. And when we’re stressed, we’re more likely to turn to unhealthy snacks for comfort – like cookies. So, the first step to taking control of your diet may be to clean up the kitchen.

Easy to eat some foods and difficult eating others.

sleeve of OREOS-wp

Why is it so easy to polish off a sleeve of Oreos – while we struggle to eat a big salad? Because the amount of food we need to feel satisfied – also known as our satiety threshold – is higher for sugary treats than it is for other foods. That’s according to Dr. David Katz from the Yale Prevention Research Center. He says the sugar goes right through us, instead of lingering in our stomach. So to feel full on fewer calories, have protein before dessert. Protein takes longer to digest, so you’ll feel too full to eat the entire ice cream sundae.

…or just take off the chill when you come in from the cold? Get some cinnamon in your system! Studies show that the spice slightly boosts our body temperature from the inside out, and cranks our calorie burn. So sprinkle a dash on top of yogurt, a latte, apple slices, or bake it into cookies.

Even if it’s big and heavily-frosted, the SUGAR COOKIE is your best choice. Because fudge has twice as much sugar as a sugar cookie – and can easily go down in a single 220-calorie bite.
