Hum before you blow!
That’s because hard blowing can trigger “reflux nasal congestion” – or swelling of the sinuses that can trap infection-causing mucus and keep you sick longer… That’s according to ear, nose and throat doctor, Jordan Josephson.

Instead, hum in a low tone. The vibrations will stimulate the hairs in your nose, helping them whisk away mucus down the back of your throat. Then, gently blow your nose to clear out the debris.

Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth for 5 seconds. Then press a finger on the spot between your eyebrows for 5 seconds. Now, alternate back and forth a few times. That causes the vomer bone – which runs along your nasal passages – to rock back and forth. And that can relieve congestion in 20 seconds.

It’ll unclog stuffy sinuses – and help you relax. Just massage your head for 2 minutes – or get a friend to do it. Concentrate on the spot at the base of your skull, where your hairline ends and your neck begins. According to experts at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Connecticut, that pressure point opens up sinuses, relieving congestion. It also stimulates the release of calming brain chemicals, so you’ll feel more relaxed.

So you finally caught the cold making the rounds at work.

Here’s what to do, according to Dr. Neil Schachter, director of the respiratory department at Mount Sinai Hospital:

• First: Hum a tune. The vibrations will loosen mucus in your airways, so you can cough it up, or blow it out into a tissue.

• Also, try an elderberry supplement. Which can reduce congestion and shorten the length of a cold or the flu.

• And if your symptoms are really bad and hit suddenly, get an anti-viral from your doctor, like Tamiflu. It can relieve symptoms and shorten your illness.

• Finally, if you haven’t gotten sick yet – take a zinc supplement. Research shows it can protect you from a cold. And if you DO get sick, one or two lozenges a day can cut the length of your cold. But don’t overdo it… Because too much zinc can cause a permanent loss-of-smell in some people.

It’s caused by air moving through a narrow space in your nose – which means, you’ve probably got some junk up there. Blowing your nose should help, but if it doesn’t, just wait until your congestion clears, or try a saline nasal rinse. However, see a doctor if the whistling starts immediately after an injury. A right hook to the face, or too much nose picking, can cause a perforated septum… Which is a hole in the wall between your nasal passages — and could possibly require surgery.

Yes and no. The body doesn’t produce MORE mucus when we eat dairy. However, milk, dairy products like yogurt, and creamy sauces can make phlegm THICKER, so you may feel more congested. But it won’t lengthen your cold.

Grab the horseradish! The condiment contains a sinus-clearing chemical that’s a lot like the one in over-the-counter decongestants. And you don’t even have to eat it! Experts say that a few sniffs from a jar will do just as good a job of clearing your sinuses.
