Try a finger massage! University of Miami researchers found taking 5 minutes to firmly massage the tips of your fingers can boost energy, alertness, and concentration for up to two hours! That’s because it stimulates acupressure points linked to the frontal lobes of the brain. And that produces energizing beta waves that enhance focus! So during your next 3pm energy slump, try a 5-minute finger massage. That’ll power you through the rest of the workday.

Grab some lemon balm! The leafy plant from the mint family contains compounds that prevent the breakdown of a brain chemical linked to focus and memory. Lemon balm also contains brain-boosting quercetin and energizing caffeic acid… a combination proven to ease anxiety, and enhance problem-solving, focus, and recall. Your best bet: Place a drop of lemon balm essential oil on each palm, cup your hands over your face, and take 10 slow, deep breaths. And you’ll feel calmer, and more focused in no time!

Concentrate on what you need to remember for 8 seconds. Studies show that’s the minimum amount of time it takes for a piece of information to go from our short-term memory to our long-term memory. Meaning, whether we want to remember someone’s name, or where we parked our car, the information’s more likely to stick in our brain if we focus on it for at least eight seconds.

New research from The University of Sussex in England found that talking on the phone hands-free while driving is just as distracting and dangerous as using a hand-held phone. That’s because both types of conversations make drivers visualize what the other person is talking about… And as a result, drivers noticed fewer road hazards – even when they looked directly at them! The researchers say, the only safe car conversation is with a front seat passenger. Because they can be scanning for road hazards, too – and they know to stop talking when you need to concentrate.

Chewing sugarless gum can increase saliva production, cleaning your mouth and reducing your risk for cavities. But gum can do something else, too. It can help you concentrate. The journal BioMed Research found chewing temporarily raises levels of hormones that make us alert and engaged in what we’re doing. And that helps you think faster.
