Mosquitoes are still active in some parts of the country. Luckily cooler temperatures are arriving, which means mosquitoes won’t be a problem soon. Mosquito bites would be much less annoying if they didn’t ITCH. So, here’s the fix: Rub coconut oil on them! Natural health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola says coconut oil is anti-inflammatory and will reduce swelling and itching faster than other skin treatments. Plus, coconut oil is anti-microbial, so it kills the germs that could cause an infection and helps bites heal quicker.

Also, coconut oil is a super lubricant that helps skin stay hydrated. So, you’re more likely to feel soothing relief from bug bites – rather than a constant urge to scratch!

Well, answer this: Did your boyfriend or husband recently grow a beard? Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie says short, prickly hair rubbing against smooth skin causes friction – which increases oil production. And when that oil gets trapped, it leads to breakouts. It also can create a “beard burn” rash. Dr. Downie says you could ask your partner to shave or to condition his beard with coconut oil, so a kiss doesn’t feel like a thousand stabs to the chin – and give you the face of a pimply teenager at 40-years-old.

Coconut oil or butter?

What’s the deal with everybody using jars of coconut oil instead of butter? Well, although it’s 90% saturated fat – it’s a different type of saturated fat. It contains lauric acid – which your body processes much faster, and more efficiently, than the saturated fat from a T-bone steak. That means less fat gets stored in your body as belly fat. And you can use coconut oil in place of most other fats – like butter, as I mentioned. It’s also good for cooking and baking, because it breaks down at a higher temperature. Wanna try it? Look for it at the supermarket – but check the label for VIRGIN coconut oil – and avoid anything that says “partially hydrogenated” which is code for unhealthy trans fat.

Stop licking them! Since saliva is acidic, licking can make the thin skin on your lips even drier – making you lick more, and creating a vicious cycle. The solution: Use lip balm with NO camphor or menthol – which are drying agents.
Instead, get one containing humectants, which draw moisture IN, like lanolin or shea butter – or just use a little coconut oil.

Our lips are more likely to get chapped in cold, dry, windy weather…

But don’t let your lip balm make things worse!
Dermatologist Dr. Leslie Baumann says balms that contain camphor and menthol – that make lips feel tingly – will suck moisture from your already dry lips and it’ll evaporate away.

So, they actually make our lips drier! Those ingredients only work on lips if they’re counterbalanced by moisturizing ingredients called “occlusives.” Those include beeswax, shea butter, and things like coconut or argan oils – which block moisture loss.

So, check the ingredients on your lip balm and make sure – if it includes camphor or menthol, it also has something like beeswax or shea butter.

When shaving your legs, use baby oil, coconut oil or argan oil – not shaving cream. Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe says the chemicals in aerosol creams can dehydrate the skin. But baby oil is hydrating. Plus, it makes hairs swell – so you’ll get a closer shave. You’ll also reduce the buildup of dead skin cells, so they won’t clog pores and contribute to ingrown hairs. One more benefit? Oil allows the razor to move more easily, so you reduce the risk of razor burn. So try baby oil instead of shaving cream.
