…because there’s a link between fried potatoes, as in French fries and potato chips, and skin cancer. It’s down to a chemical called acrylamide, which is formed when foods are fried, especially starchy ones, like potatoes.

It’s a toxic chemical known to cause reproductive problems and birth defects. It’s also found in cigarette smoke. But new research has found it raises a person’s risk of skin cancer by 13% over time. In fact, several potato chip companies settled a lawsuit… and agreed to change their manufacturing process to reduce the amount of acrylamide formed during the frying process. So limit the amount of fried potatoes you eat to reduce your risk of skin cancer.

If you live with a smoker, or hang out with one, get yourself to a health-food store and pick up some broccoli sprouts – or broccoli sprout powder. You can even order it on Amazon. What do broccoli sprouts do? They can clear benzene out of your system – which is one of the toxic chemicals you breathe in from secondhand smoke. It’s down to a phyto-chemical in broccoli sprouts called sulforaphane – which stimulates the production of enzymes that detoxify us. So if you’re buddies with a smoker – down a daily mixture of a scoop of broccoli sprout powder, mixed with one part pineapple juice and one part water. The pineapple juice will reduce inflammation from the secondhand smoke too.

Nearly two-thirds of young adult women do what’s considered “light smoking” – meaning 5 or fewer cigarettes a day. But no matter how many cigarettes you smoke, you’re setting yourself up for an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, tooth decay, and cancer of the lungs, liver, throat and pancreas. And research shows that light smoking can be as hard to quit as chain smoking. That’s how addictive nicotine is.

If you grew up in a home with a smoker, eat two apples a day. A study of 35,000 people by the National Institutes of Health found that it reduces lung irritation and helps prevent respiratory problems caused by secondhand smoke in childhood. So why do apples help protect and repair the lungs? Fruit-based fiber. So, a cup of raw blackberries or raspberries could get the same results. Or an apple and a pear. It turns out, the fiber in fruit benefits the lungs by reducing inflammation, and improving the body’s ability to process antioxidants.

A lot of people don’t want to give up smoking because they’re afraid they’ll gain weight. If that’s your excuse, you’ll have to find a new one – because researchers at Brigham Young University just blew that theory up in smoke, so to speak. They found that cigarette smoke actually causes metabolic changes that lead to WEIGHT GAIN. Even worse: The effect is stronger with SECONDHAND smoke. So a husband who smokes may gain a few pounds – but his poor wife breathing in all those fumes will gain even more. So if you’re looking to lose weight – ditch the cigarettes.

I’ve got a list of surprising headache triggers and helpful remedies.

Stressful relationships can trigger a headache. That’s because when we’re anxious, we tend to take shorter breaths, leaving us oxygen-deprived. Our body tries to compensate by constricting blood vessels…And that constriction can cause head pain. So, when you feel overwhelmed, try the 2-5-5-5 method: Take 2 minutes, and breathe in for 5 seconds, hold it for 5, then breathe out for 5.

Aromas. 1 in 50 headache sufferers are sensitive to specific “trigger smells”, like gasoline, tobacco, and perfume. If that’s you, carry a bottle of essential oils to sniff when you’re around trigger smells. Especially lavender, which has been shown to boost relaxation, or peppermint, which reduces pain.

A sunny day. According to the Northern California Headache Clinic, the glare of the sun bouncing off water, pavement, glass or snow interferes with the area of the brain that controls pain…Which can cause an instant migraine. So, try wearing sunglasses with polarized lenses, and putting them on before you step outside.
