…maybe it’s you? Well, here’s the reason why it makes us feel so awesome: According to psychologists from the University of Pennsylvania, it helps us adjust and cope when we’re faced with challenges. Whether that challenge is a crazy-busy day, getting the whole family ready for the holidays, or just trying to remember all the chores you have to do. Because modern life throws at us more information than our short-term memory can hold. Writing lists helps free up space so we can focus on what’s important, knowing we can come back to the list to refresh our memory. But there’s another reason why we love making lists: We love crossing things OFF our lists. It actually gives us a little brain thrill – or as psychologists call it, a “reward response.” And that little feel-good jolt propels us to keep going, so we can cross more things off the list.

Which is worse: Eating too much at a party – or drinking too much? Even if you’re not driving, drinking too much is a LOT worse. That’s according to registered dietician Stephanie Middleberg. She says, aside from possibly doing things you’ll regret, because drinking impairs your judgment, it also weakens your immune system. So you’re more likely to pick up an infection. Drinking too much at a party will also ruin your sleep. Sure you may sleep heavily at first, but once your body metabolizes the alcohol, your brain will wake up, causing restless sleep. Plus, drinking increases hunger for high-fat foods. So you may end up eating too much anyway. Bottom line: It’s best to limit your food and your alcohol intake at a party.

Don’t let your pets near the water under your Christmas tree!
The tree’s sap can turn water toxic. Plus, the preservatives some people add to the water can make pets sick.
If your pet keeps getting under the tree, snapping a tree skirt tightly around the trunk can keep them from accessing the water underneath.

In one study from the University of Rochester, people who looked at something green felt significantly calmer and happier. It works because green is associated with peaceful, natural settings – which can help relieve anxiety and stress. Scientists even call it “the green effect,” and theorize that our brains have evolved to relax at the calming sight of trees and grass.

Studies show that 56% of us have trouble sleeping between Thanksgiving and New Year’s…And it’s often because of adrenal exhaustion. That’s where high levels of the stress hormone cortisol overwhelm your adrenal gland, causing a drop in the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin.
How can you improve your adrenal function? Natural health expert Dr. Andrew Weil recommends a low-glycemic diet…That means, avoid white flour and sugar…And stick with whole grains…As well as protein-rich foods, like meat, poultry, dairy, soy products, beans and lentils.

If you’re not counting calories during the holidays, doctors say you should at least watch your salt intake. Because hospitals see a lot of heart patients between Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas. Most of the time it’s because of too much salt in holiday meals. Salt can be very dangerous because it promotes water retention, which can be fatal for anyone with a weak heart. To avoid a trip to the Emergency Room, instead of flavoring your holiday dishes with salt, use herbs, spices and other natural flavorings.

Don’t bother telling a scrooge to cheer up…He was born that way.

A study conducted by Vanderbilt University reveals that grumpy people’s brains are wired to make them grouchier than other folks…

It stems from a portion of the brain called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. And the more activity in that area, the more likely a person is to be a grump…It’s also the part of the brain that controls sweating, stomach acidity, heart rate and other physical feelings associated with stress and bad moods.

Be careful trimming your Christmas tree! According to the CDC, nearly 6,000 people in the US are treated every year in emergency rooms for falls that occur while putting decorations on Christmas trees. So make sure your ladder is secure and stable before putting the star on top of the tree.

To boost your mood, look no further than your Christmas tree. Christmas trees help deliver pure oxygen and scrub carbon dioxide out of the air, giving you an instant energy surge. And that’s not all. Research has found that the pine scent is also an instant mood-lifter. Scientists found that the smell of Christmas trees cause energy-boosting beta waves in your brain to spike…Improving your mood, increasing alertness and putting you in an invigorated state.

First, let’s deal with your Christmas tree. Research shows that ONE IN TEN people have an allergic reaction to a substance found in Evergreen sap. And millions more get stuffy from the natural pollens on Christmas tree branches! So before you drag that new tree into your house, spritz it down with your garden hose. Then make sure the room you put it in is well ventilated. Research shows that opening windows and circulating fresh air for at least 10 minutes a day, will cut your allergy flare-ups in HALF.

Next, let’s deal with your eye-watering Christmas decorations. Chances are if you’ve had them in storage for a year, they’re covered with a thin layer of dust, pet dander, and mold spores.

So wrap the ornaments in a plastic bag and stick them in the freezer for about five hours. That’ll kill off 100% of the dust mites.

Here’s one last culprit of the winter sniffles:
Scented candles, incense and dirty chimneys are the worst indoor pollutants. That can be as dangerous as second-hand smoke! So use electric candles that you plug in instead of light up. And get your chimney and fireplace cleaned by a professional.
