Specifically, 3 degrees colder. According to the University of Utah, women naturally store more fat in their torsos than men. That boosts blood flow and protects a woman’s vital and reproductive organs – so they don’t freeze to death, and she can carry on the human race. But it leaves a woman’s hands and feet chilly. So, next time you hold hands with your partner and he says, “Your hands are always freezing,” now you know why.

Even though it’s springtime, it’s still chilly in some areas. So here’s the scenario: You’ve thrown on extra layers and turned up the thermostat, yet you STILL can’t stop shivering. What do you do?

Try Ujjayi breathing, an ancient yoga technique known as “victorious breath.” Basically, it involves taking slow, deep breaths through your nose, with your mouth CLOSED. Some practitioners also recommend focusing on the sound of air passing slowly through your nose, which can sound like ocean waves crashing on a beach!

So, how does Ujjayi breathing stop the shivering? Researchers say air passing through small nostrils creates more friction than through a wider throat and generates extra heat in your lungs, so you feel warmer. And the “ocean waves” sounds help anchor the mind in a way proven to promote calmness. For best results, take at least 15 slow, deep breaths through your nose.

Here’s a home remedy for warming your feet on those days when they’re chilled to the bone: A bottle of sesame oil and an old pair of wool socks. But don’t use toasted sesame oil, unless you want to smell like Chinese take-out.

Now, here’s what to do: Pour a quarter-sized amount of oil into your palm and massage it all over each foot – top and bottom – for 5 minutes… or have someone else do it. Then, put on the socks. It’s an Ayurvedic medicine technique – which is one of the oldest forms of holistic medicine. That’ll warm up your chilly feet fast, because sesame oil is instantly warming, and one of the most nutrient-rich and easily absorbed oils around. It’s also known to reduce anxiety and encourage restful sleep.

If Fall weather is leaving you feeling kind of chilly, wear something red! According to color therapists, just looking at the color red can physically warm us up. That’s because red is the longest wavelength of visible light – just shy of infrared radiation, or heat… And it helps boost our heart rate and circulation.

Yes, it’s True. That’s because a woman’s body is better at regulating the temperature of her core – to protect her organs. So, less blood flows out to her skin, limbs, fingers, and toes…Which makes her feel colder. So guys, be a hero and offer the woman you love your jacket.

You know the saying “cold hands, warm heart”…

Well, there’s science behind it.

In a chilly environment, your body re-directs blood from your arms, legs, hands and feet to your torso, to insulate your vital organs, like your heart. That’s why your fingers and toes may feel cold, but your core temperature stays normal.

Can exercising in cold weather make you sick?

Nope. Colds and flu are caused by viruses, not weather. However, cold, dry air keeps viruses alive longer – so we’re more likely to catch them. But as far as your workout, even if it’s chilly, go for it. You can actually burn more calories in the cold. Just make sure if it’s really cold to keep your fingers covered and your feet warm so you don’t end up with frostbite.
