Kids who suck their thumbs for years can force their teeth out of alignment. But they’d probably need braces anyway. The good news is: It reduces their risk of developing allergies! That’s from a study of over a‑thousand kids in Pediatrics. Because kids’ fingers are disgustingly germy. And by regularly ingesting those germs in small amounts, kids build up a tolerance to pollen, pet dander, and dust. And kids who suck their thumb AND bite their nails get an even bigger immune-boosting effect!

Sure, it can make your kid’s teeth crooked. But they’d probably need braces anyway. In the meantime, it’ll boost their immunity and cut their chances of developing allergies! A study of over a‑thousand kids in the journal Pediatrics found those who sucked their thumbs for years were less likely to develop allergies as they grew. Because kids’ fingers are gross germ factories! But by ingesting germs in small amounts over time, they built a tolerance to things like pollen, pet dander, and dust. And if kids are thumb-suckers AND nail-biters, they get an even bigger immunity boost!

A new study has found headaches in children increase in the fall because of school stress caused by academic performance and changed bedtime routines. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, analyzed about 1,300 visits to the hospital’s emergency department to figure this out. And while visits for headaches among kids between the ages of 5 to 18 stayed about the same for most of the year – they jumped over 30% in the fall.

Other factors contributing to kids’ headaches: An increase in after-school activities, skipping meals and not drinking enough water.

If you’d like your child to get a better night’s sleep, feed them more foods that contain Omega-3 fatty acids. A recent study in the Journal of Sleep Research found that children getting 600 milligrams of Omega-3s a day slept an hour longer and woke up 7 times less often, than kids who weren’t getting the Omega-3s. They believe it’s because fatty acids trigger production of the sleep hormone, melatonin.

Want your child to eat healthy vegetables, like broccoli and carrots – instead of not-so-healthy ones, like French fries? Make their plate as colorful as possible. Research at Cornell University found that children find colorful foods highly appealing. And when they’re faced with a plate containing 7 different items, in 6 different colors – they’re more likely to at least try a little of everything.

Here’s something you may have wondered at some point. Why do most pen caps have a HOLE in them?
Some are tiny pinholes at the tip of the cap… while other pen caps have small vents. Well, wonder no more… those holes actually serve an important purpose. According to Business Insider, about 1,000 kids a year are rushed to the ER after swallowing parts of pens and pencils. And just in case a kid accidentally swallows a pen cap, the holes were added by manufacturers to help kids continue BREATHING, so they don’t choke to death!

You know the blue light our phones and iPads give off messes with our melatonin levels. But the effect is even worse for kids and teenagers. Typically, a few hours before bed, our pineal gland, which is a pea-size organ in the brain, starts releasing melatonin. That reduces our alertness and makes sleep more inviting. But if enough blue light hits the eye, the gland can stop releasing melatonin. And 68% of teens have an electronic device in their bedroom all night long. But teen brains are even more sensitive to blue light than adults.

According to researchers at Brown University, regular exposure to electronic devices at night reduces the sleep hormone melatonin in adults by about 20%. But in tweens and teens, melatonin is suppressed by 40%! Twice as much. And even when teens are exposed to just one-tenth as much blue light as adults, they suppressed much more melatonin than adults exposed to full-strength blue light. So make sure your kids aren’t turning in with their electronic devices… Because researchers at Brown University believe it will really wreck their sleep.

Parents, do your kids have a pair of child-size headphones that the box said were, quote, “safe for young ears”? Don’t believe it. Because the consumer-product review site, Wirecutter, did a little investigating. They analyzed 30 different children’s headphone brands, and found that half of them did not restrict decibel levels as advertised. And the  worst ones allowed volume so loud it could permanently damage a child’s hearing – or even an adult’s – within minutes! For reference, the noise of a lawnmower is 100 decibels – and can damage hearing after 15 minutes. And the government mandated safe limit in the workplace for adults is 85 decibels – which is like the noise an idling bulldozer makes.

Well, these child-friendly headphones allow the volume to reach 114 decibels – WAY over the safe limit. If you want to see if your child’s headphones are safe – go to TheWirecutter.com for their list “Best Kids Headphones.” And make sure kids never listen to anything higher than 60% of the max volume – and to give their ears a break at least every hour.

Kids should spend 3 hours A DAY exercising.

That’s the recommendation from the Finnish government, which advised parents to actively encourage kids to pursue hobbies and interests that require physical exertion. Especially kids age 8 and UNDER! That may sound a bit extreme over here – where most of the population never breaks a sweat. But according to the BBC, Finland produces some of the most physically fit children in Europe, and some of the highest academic results among schoolchildren in the world. So maybe there’s a link between all that exercise and smart kids. Finland’s Minister for Education and Culture thinks it’s no coincidence. She says physical activity contributes to a child’s happiness and promotes learning. Again – the recommendation from the Finnish government is: Kids should spend 3 hours exercising – every DAY.
