According to child psychologists at Erasmus University Rotterdam, the more TV a 4-year-old child watches, the more likely they are to become a bully later on in school. And it doesn’t matter if it’s an educational TV show or not – the researchers say the lack of social interaction that goes along with watching TV leads to aggressive behavior.

Make sure they can’t access any cleaning supplies – or get under the sink where you may keep chemicals. Because 1-year-olds are more likely to suffer permanent eye damage from chemical burns than people of any other age! That’s according to the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

Previously researchers thought young adults were most at risk of eye damage from splashing chemicals, due to their workplace environments. But a 1-year-old is twice as likely to suffer eye burns as an adult. And babies are 13 times more likely to suffer eye damage than 7-year-olds. Chemical burns are the worst type of eye injury you can get… Because the longer the chemical is in the eye, the more likely it is to result in permanent damage. And babies are most likely to grab a spray bottle of cleaner. They get fascinated with the spray mechanism. The good news is – this is completely preventable by putting cleaning supplies on a high shelf – or locking them up.

A government study found that the servings are far too high in calories for a single meal. In fact, some of the meals contain more than a thousand calories, which is almost as many calories as some elementary-school children need for the entire day. Instead, order your meal and share it with your child.

If you grew up in a home with a smoker, eat two apples a day. A study of 35,000 people by the National Institutes of Health found that it reduces lung irritation and helps prevent respiratory problems caused by secondhand smoke in childhood. So why do apples help protect and repair the lungs? Fruit-based fiber. So, a cup of raw blackberries or raspberries could get the same results. Or an apple and a pear. It turns out, the fiber in fruit benefits the lungs by reducing inflammation, and improving the body’s ability to process antioxidants.

How do I know? Because if your child is between age 6 and 19, there’s a 50/50 chance he or she is dehydrated. That’s according to a study conducted by Harvard scientists, who analyzed 4,000 kids.
And they found that nearly 55% of them were “inadequately” hydrated, with boys being more at risk than girls. Erica Kenney led the study for the Harvard School of Public Health – and she says, this doesn’t mean that kids are dropping like flies or need to go to the hospital. But even slight dehydration can negatively affect a child’s mood, energy level, and ability to learn – and can lead to headaches and irritability. And kids are more prone to dehydration than adults. That’s because their thirst mechanism isn’t fully developed, so they often don’t feel thirsty until they’re in the early stages of dehydration.

If you want your kids to be more physically active, STOP being a helicopter parent. A study at North Carolina State University found that parents who watch their children like hawks are actually hurting their child’s overall health and welfare. Because when moms and dads always jump in to help, or keep a child safe, it interrupts the so-called “flow of play.” So, instead of kids running around with their friends, they’re more likely to sit quietly in front of the computer or TV… Which raises their risk for obesity.

If one of your good friends gives birth, you’re more likely to become pregnant in the next two years. It’s due to “social contagion” – that’s the term psychologists use to describe how our friends’ behaviors and attitudes can influence our own behavior. And a study in the American Sociological Review found that one of the biggest predictors of when a woman will have her first child is when her friends start having children.

There’s a real danger we need to protect our kids and grandkids from: Getting thermal burns from hot playground equipment!

Every year, kids end up in the ER after getting scorched on metal slides or swings. But new statistics show that even playground equipment that’s NOT made of metal is responsible for one-third of all playground burns. Like with one boy in Texas, who slid down a plastic slide – and ended up in the ER with second-degree burns along the length of his back.

•When playground equipment was tested by ABC News, on an 80-degree day, the surface temperature of a metal slide was 126 degrees Fahrenheit… And paramedics say human skin begins to burn at 124 degrees.

•Even worse than the slide was the playground’s blacktop – or asphalt playing surface – which was a roasting 132 degrees.

•And the rubber mats surrounding the playground equipment – which are designed to cushion a fall? They registered at 142 degrees – which is the same temperature as a fresh cup of hot coffee.

A lot of us refer to our pets as our “kids” or “fur-babies” and consider them members of the family…And that could be the key to keeping us healthy and happy. Because any kind of emotional bonding – whether it’s with a beloved dog or your child – triggers the release of brain chemicals, like oxytocin… That protects us against a variety of health conditions – everything from depression to heart disease. So the next time your friend, the crazy cat lady, talks about going home to feed her “kids,” don’t laugh.

She’s also boosting her odds of living a longer, happier life.
