When you’re making a salad, soup, stir-fry, or casserole, cutting your veggies into big chunks not only takes less time – it can help you drop pounds. Chomping down on big pieces of vegetables requires more chewing and more effort to eat. That’ll slow down how quickly you eat and help you feel more satisfied. Put those two together and it translates to eating less food overall.

…especially if it’s something crunchy. Because hearing your own munching helps you eat less. Researchers from Brigham Young University found people ate more pretzels when ambient sounds drowned out the crunch. It’s all down to being mindful. Because, when we can hear ourselves chewing, we’re more cognizant of what we’re eating. It’s like being in a restaurant and slurping your soup – and suddenly you feel like everyone’s staring because you’re so loud – so you slurp less, right? Well, when we hear ourselves chomping, even when we’re alone, we stop eating sooner.

If you’re juicing and drinking smoothies – you may also feel like you’re starving all the time!

Here’s why, according to registered dietitian Beth Warren:
First: It’s because you’re not chewing anything. Liquid calories mess with the way we register fullness. Because chewing activates part of the digestive process. So if you’re sipping berries through a straw, you won’t have the same feeling of being satisfied as when you actually chew berries.
Also, we can drink faster than we can eat… Again, because there’s no chewing. But when we consume something faster, the brain doesn’t have time to register the “I’m full” signal. So you don’t feel full.

Here are some weight loss tips that food scientists and obesity researchers personally follow to keep from having to buy the next size up.

• First: They avoid high-fructose corn syrup. Neuroscientist Dr. Nicole Avena says that people gain weight faster when they consume corn syrup, compared to those who eat the equivalent amount of table sugar. It may seem odd, since corn syrup and sugar both contain fructose and glucose. But in sugar, the two molecules are bound together, while in corn syrup, they’re separate, which can make the fructose easier to store as fat.

• Another diet tip weight loss experts follow themselves: They eat a protein-rich breakfast. Researchers at the University of Connecticut found that people who get the majority of their morning calories from protein feel fuller longer, consume fewer calories over the rest of the day and are less likely to crave late-night snacks, which makes it easier to stick to a healthy eating plan.

• Finally: If you only make one change to your eating habits this month, here it is: Chew slowly and put down your fork between bites. Food scientist Kathleen Melanson says it works because eating more slowly gives your stomach time to send your brain “I’m full” signals. In fact, slower eaters can lose nearly two pounds a month, even if they don’t change any other part of their diet.

Try eating an apple before your next meal.

Do that and studies show you’ll eat less overall. That’s because apples are loaded with fiber, which takes longer to digest. Plus, they require a lot of chewing. And more chewing tells our brain, “I must be eating a lot to need all this chewing!”
