They’re good for our mental health! Researchers at the UK’s University of Manchester found 60% of people battling mental illness say their pets play a significant role in managing their disease. The reason? Because taking care of an animal keeps people on a routine schedule. And when you throw in unconditional love, it can reduce stress and improve quality of life.

If your cat is meowing a lot all of a sudden, don’t shush him, pay attention. Cats meow as a form of communication, and excessive meowing can be linked to medical problems, like dementia, hyperthyroidism, and high blood pressure. So if your cat is more vocal than normal, take him to the vet.

Also, don’t try to stop your cat from clawing – just give him something safe to sink his claws into. Because scratching and clawing are how cats relieve anxiety and release pent up energy. So provide scratching posts to help your cat’s mental health.

You’ve heard women referred to as “Cat Ladies.” Well, there are a lot of “Cat Gentlemen” out there, too. According to a recent survey, 53% of men who own cats say their cat is the most important thing in their life! And that’s a good thing. Pet ownership has been linked to less stress, lower blood pressure, and better heart health. And 87% of doctors say their patients’ moods improved as a result of owning a pet.

Overweight cats are at risk for diabetes, arthritis and a shorter lifespan. So here’s how to help your cat slim down:

First: Count their kibble. Just 10 extra pieces a day will add a pound to your cat in a year, which is like a woman gaining 15 pounds. So use a measuring cup.

Better yet, try canned food. Compared to kibble, it has fewer carbs, more protein and added moisture. And it’s a fixed serving.

One last cat-dieting tip: Don’t give treats out of guilt. Like, when you get home after being gone all day. Instead, play together for 15 minutes. You’ll both get a calorie-free mood boost AND exercise.

You’ve heard the saying, “music soothes the savage beast.” Well, new research shows that classical music can soothe your cat! According to the Journal of Feline Medicine, classical music has the most calming effect on cats by far – while pop music came in second.

And classical is especially effective because it tends to contain tempos and frequencies that match a cat’s purring.

So try playing classical music in the car the next time you have to take your cat to the vet!

We’ve talked before about how toxic xylitol is to pets (cats and dogs)… that’s the artificial sweetener found in a lot of sugar-free foods. But your dog is most likely to encounter xylitol in sugar-free gum that’s been spit out on the street or sidewalk. And if your dog gets it on their paws, and tries to lick it off, they could get really sick. So always check your dog’s paws after a walk… and if there’s gum stuck to their pads, get some vegetable oil and rub it all around. It’ll practically disintegrate the gum within seconds – so you can safely wipe it away.

Microbiologist Dr. Susan Lynch says owning a dog reduces the risk of allergies, in kids and adults. That’s because pets – especially dogs – introduce new microbes to the home and your body. And that helps us build up our immunity to more allergens.

Pros: Dr. Natalie Dautovich from the National Sleep Foundation says we humans feel vulnerable in bed and while we’re sleeping… So having an animal nearby can make us feel more secure. Pets also lower our blood pressure and calm our nerves, so we have an easier time drifting off. Plus, if you’re single, snuggling up with a pet provides the same feel-good dose of oxytocin that we get from cuddling with a partner.

So what about the cons of sleeping with your pet? On the relationship front, animals create a physical barrier between you, so you’re less likely to kiss and cuddle each other – and more likely to cuddle your pet. That’s according to marriage and family therapist Dr. Kat Van Kirk. Plus, if you have allergies, you’re getting up close and personal for 8 hours with dirt, dander, pollen, mold and dust mites – all from your pet’s fur. Which can greatly increase your allergy symptoms.

For an instant happiness boost: Gaze into your dog’s eyes. It floods your brain with oxytocin, the feel-good cuddle hormone… and it does the same for your dog. That strengthens your bond and makes you both happier.
This may work with cats and other animals too! Try it and let me know.
