You know you should get a 30-minute dose of moderate exercise, 5 days a week. So does your yoga class count? Maybe not. Moderate exercise means getting your heart pumping about 130 beats per minute – or walking to the beat of the song “YMCA.” And most yoga classes fall short of that heart-rate goal. However, you don’t have to stick your yoga mat in the closet just yet. It has major benefits as far as improving balance and strength and reducing stress. And if you want it to count as moderate exercise, you need to move through poses faster and focus on ones that engage your core. If you want to see what that looks like, Google Cardio Yoga and you’ll see examples. Otherwise, keep doing yoga for the other health perks, but add in moderate heart-pumping exercise 5 days a week.

If you want abs of steel, skip the crunches and planks, and do cardio! Yes, planks strengthen your core, but you won’t SEE that core without aerobic exercise. In fact, exercise scientists from Auburn University found people doing abs exercises for 6 weeks lost NO abdominal fat, because we can’t spot-reduce fat. But consistent aerobic exercise, like running or swimming, plus strength training and cutting calories DOES lead to weight loss, everywhere on your body, including your stomach.

What we watch while doing cardio at the gym can impact our workout, according to Australia’s University of Western Sydney. For example, skip news or game shows, because whatever triggers deep thinking can tank your workout intensity. Instead watch shows with a physical component that’ll inspire you to work up a sweat, like “The Amazing Race,” or a sporting event. Because research shows when people watch a video of someone else being active, it increases blood flow, heart rate, sweat and respiration.

Even if you hate to exercise, and avoid it like the plague, you can still get motivated to get moving. How? By finding something, anything about it that interests you. For example, think about the conversation you might get into with the person on the treadmill next to you. Or the new move you’ll learn in cardio dance class.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that when people in a study group were told they could take the elevator or the stairs but that there was a rare painting on the landing two floors up, 10% more people took the stairs instead of the elevator. The reason? The researchers believe it’s because we don’t like unresolved mysteries. So our curiosity pushes us to follow through on actions that require willpower. And they believe that knowing this, we can use it on ourselves to boost our willpower, and get more exercise. They suggest that while you’re deciding whether or not to go to the gym, think about the interesting things you might learn, or what might happen, while you’re at the gym. That could be all the motivation you need to get there.

30-20-10-wp

If you want to try high-intensity interval training, it’s as easy as remembering these numbers: 30-20-10. That’s an equation that adds up to exercise success, according to research from Denmark.
So choose your favorite form of cardio and go easy for 30 seconds… increase your exertion for the next 20 seconds… Then go all out for 10 seconds – and repeat that pattern 10 times. That’s the 30-20-10 method. And because it seems so doable, when people in studies tried it, they were more likely to stick with it. And they improved their overall fitness and lowered their blood pressure.

One minute of laughing is the equivalent of 10 minutes of cardio…as far as your blood vessels are concerned. Because when we’re laughing, our blood vessels can widen by up to 50% – compared to when we’re stressed. That’s the same result we get from a cholesterol-controlling prescription – or 10 minutes of exercise. And that’s why laughter can help protect against heart disease.

ImageForget a facelift, just work out! When we stick with an exercise routine, we can make our bodies 12 years younger, biologically speaking. Researchers found cardio workouts increase oxygen intake by 25%, stimulate circulation, and even produce proteins that grow new brain cells! So to look and feel more youthful, squeeze in 30 minutes on most days.
