If the salsa you ate was spicier than you anticipated… And now your mouth is on fire, what can you do?  Order something smothered in whipped cream, or head to the pantry and grab the Reddi-Wip. That’s because the burning sensation you’re experiencing is caused by capsaicin – a compound in peppers which bonds to taste receptors on our tongue. But there’s a protein in dairy – called casein – that counteracts capsaicin’s bonding power. And whipped cream contains MORE casein than any other dairy product! All you need is a spoonful to get relief.

Dr. Ashwin Mehta is the director of integrative medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He says that capsaicin – the compound that makes peppers hot – tricks our brain into releasing pain-killing endorphins. It also blocks the release of chemicals that increase sensations of pain. So, have a spicy burrito. Your mouth may be on fire, but you’ll have less pain.

A study found that adding a-quarter teaspoon of chili pepper to each meal can prevent overeating. Mainly because we tend to slow down and take fewer bites when our mouth feels like it’s on fire… Which explains why many people in the study stopped eating when they’d consumed just 75% of their daily calories! And as a bonus, the capsaicin in chili peppers boosts our metabolism, helping us burn an extra 100 calories a day.

Do you love spicy food?

If so, you’re less likely to get a blood clot! That’s because jalapenos, cayenne pepper, and hot sauce contain a compound called capsaicin. That’s what gives those foods their heat – and it’s also a powerful anti-inflammatory. That means it helps prevent the formation of blood clots in arteries. Capsaicin also helps break down dietary fat, so it’s less likely to be converted into artery-clogging, bad cholesterol.
