Take a walk through the hills, or across uneven ground. That’ll help you burn 13 more calories per minute, and engage more muscles than walking on a smooth, level path. That’s the latest from a study at the University of Rome. If you’re not near a trail, you can get a similar calorie-burning boost by walking on a treadmill raised to an incline of 3 percent.

If you’re having trouble motivating yourself to get to the gym – or go for a run – try this: Download an audiobook. A study from the University of Pennsylvania found that people went to the gym 50% more often when they had an audiobook to listen to.
And once you get to the gym, focus on exercises that use your legs. You’ll burn a lot more calories. That’s because our legs house the biggest muscles in our body – so working them increases our calorie burn.

Going for a 10-minute walk every day or going for an hour-long jog once a week?
The daily exercise is better, even if you don’t break a sweat. That’s according to Dr. Michelle Segar, the director of Sports, Health and Activity Research at the University of Michigan. She says it’s best to choose consistency over quantity. In other words, any exercise you can do daily is beneficial – and, if you keep it short and simple, you’re more likely to keep at it. Plus, studies show that daily workouts – even small ones – increase calorie burn, help build strong bones, muscles and tendons, and improve balance.

At the gym, let go of the handrails on the treadmill!

Because when we grab onto the handrails, we have a tendency to lean back. And people who do that burn significantly fewer calories. That’s because, when we walk up a real hill, we lean forward – which works our calf muscles, glutes and hamstrings. It also increases our calorie burn. If you grab on for dear life and lean back, you don’t get any of that. So, if you can’t let go, you either need to slow down or decrease the incline.

…or just take off the chill when you come in from the cold? Get some cinnamon in your system! Studies show that the spice slightly boosts our body temperature from the inside out, and cranks our calorie burn. So sprinkle a dash on top of yogurt, a latte, apple slices, or bake it into cookies.
