If you’re anxious about what you have on your plate tomorrow, get a little more sleep tonight. According to the experts at UC Berkeley, increasing your sleep before a stressful event – by turning in a little earlier, or sleeping a little later – can reduce anxiety. It works by decreasing activity in the area of the brain that heightens stress – the amygdala. So if you have a job interview tomorrow – an exam – or an important sales call – get a little more sleep, and you’ll feel calmer and more in control tomorrow.

You’re probably less stressed than most. Yale researchers found that acts of kindness – as simple as holding the door for someone, or bringing in the trash barrels for your elderly neighbor – can make you calmer and happier, immediately and long-term. In their study, the researchers found when we help others, it gives us a sense of purpose and puts our own troubles into perspective.

Talk to someone who’s as anxious as you are! That advice comes from USC psychologist, Dr. Sarah Townsend. She says, connecting with someone who’s having the same feelings you are can buffer you against stress. That’s because you’ll be reassured that your emotional state is completely normal. And it’ll calm you down more than sharing your anxiety with someone who’s totally calm.

Forgiving someone who wronged you can do more than improve your mood. It can also relieve physical aches and pains! In a study at Duke University, people with lower back pain were told to work on letting go of their anger toward someone who’d wronged them. The result? Their pain levels dropped significantly. That’s because anger and other negative feelings trigger a reaction in the brain that increases the feelings of pain. But thinking calming, peaceful thoughts diminishes that perception, and helps ease the ache. So, if you want to feel fewer aches and pains, just forgive someone who upset you.

If you’re feeling anxious, hit the playground and hop on a swing. Or find the nearest hammock, porch swing, or rocking chair. Then spend two minutes swinging, rocking or swaying. The repetitive motion relaxes the nervous system and calms the amygdala, the brain region linked to stress and anxiety. In fact, swinging is so powerful, the University of Miami says it can cut production of stress hormones by 25% for 2 hours. Just from 2 minutes of swinging, rocking or swaying.

How many trees are on the street where you live?

10 or more? Good news: Those trees bring a health boost that’s similar to being years younger. A study in the journal Environmental Health found that people who lived in wooded areas, near parks, or on tree-lined streets, had lower blood pressure, and more activity in the parasympathetic nervous system – which calms us down by lowering our heart rate. But even if you live in a concrete jungle, you can still get the green, leafy benefits by spending just 3 days and 2 nights in a wooded area – like on a camping trip.

Grab some lemon balm! The leafy plant from the mint family contains compounds that prevent the breakdown of a brain chemical linked to focus and memory. Lemon balm also contains brain-boosting quercetin and energizing caffeic acid… a combination proven to ease anxiety, and enhance problem-solving, focus, and recall. Your best bet: Place a drop of lemon balm essential oil on each palm, cup your hands over your face, and take 10 slow, deep breaths. And you’ll feel calmer, and more focused in no time!

When it comes to keeping your mind sharp, our ancient ancestors were on to something. Florida State psychology professor, Dr. Thomas Joiner says they thrived thanks to a healthy trifecta: They interacted a lot with nature, and with others, and maintained a high level of physical activity. Put all of that together, and it can be calming and invigorating at the same time. And you don’t have to do all 3 separately. For example, invite a friend hiking, fishing, or for a round of golf. You’ll knock out all 3 at once, and be thinking more clearly as a result.

There’s a scientific reason you hold your partner’s hand to express love, or your child’s hand when they’re scared: Because skin-to-skin contact produces the bonding hormone oxytocin. Psychologists at DePauw University say skin contact also causes a calming drop in blood pressure and heart rate in BOTH of you. So, next time you need to feel calmer or happier or think a loved one does, grab their hand and give it a squeeze.

People who listen to crashing ocean waves feel a lot calmer in 7 minutes. It’s down to something called the “biophilia hypothesis” – our innate connection to living things that we find reassuring and soothing. It explains our desire to care for animals and plants. And hearing ocean waves, rustling leaves, or a gurgling stream taps into that innate desire to be close to nature. Can’t get outdoors? Try one of these free apps: “Ocean Wave Sounds” or “Nature Space.”
