When they’re both organic and grass-fed, they have the same amount of amino acids, which repair and build muscle. But goat’s milk contains more omega-3 fatty acids – which improve heart and brain health. Plus more calcium, magnesium, and C‑L‑A – that’s a type of acid that lowers our risk for cancer and reduces body fat. So, go for goat’s milk!

…others drink Gatorade, or chocolate milk for the carbs, electrolytes, and calcium. But the ancient Roman Gladiators had their own post-workout recovery drink, full of vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes. And the secret ingredient was: ASHES!

Researchers from the Medical University of Vienna analyzed the bones of Roman gladiators to learn more about what they ate. And discovered they were drinking a combination of water and plant ashes, which were consumed to fortify the body after physical exertion, and to promote better bone healing.

Fabian Kanz is a forensic anthropologist who led the research. He says ashes were the ancient way to replenish electrolytes.

So should we be adding plant ashes to our protein smoothies? Well, the scientists say they DO have some nutritional value. They contain high levels of calcium, which we need to maintain strong bones. But if you’re already eating Greek yogurt, kale, broccoli, and sardines – or taking a calcium supplement – you probably can skip the ashes.

It’s not your imagination… research shows that fingernails tend to grow about three times faster than toenails. Scientists say it’s because our fingers are closer to our heart than our toes… which means they receive greater blood flow and get more of the nutrients they need to grow – including protein, calcium, and vitamin D.

Registered dietician Kristen Smith says one serving of ice cream provides 10% of the calcium we need daily. And calcium is proven to reduce tension and anxiety. Plus, the fat in ice cream helps our body absorb minerals and nutrients that help regulate mood. Which is why people who eat full-fat foods have lower rates of depression than people on low-fat diets. So how much ice cream can we have daily? One half-cup. That’s about the size of a tennis ball. If you’re watching your calories, get slow-churned ice cream. It contains more air, which means fewer calories per serving.

Whether it’s black or green, a daily cup of tea may help you to live longer. The reason? Because it soothes your heart. Research from Johns Hopkins found that people who drink between 1 and 3 cups of tea a day have less calcium buildup in their arteries… which makes them 35% LESS likely to have a heart attack or stroke than those who DON’T drink tea.

Now that it’s wintertime and we still need to exercise, do you swim at the local YMCA – or spend all your free time in the pool? If you spend more than 6 hours in a pool every week, you could be putting your teeth at risk! Because pool water that contains too much chlorine is dangerously acidic… and when highly-acidic water comes into contact with tooth enamel for extended periods, you can develop so-called “swimmer’s calculus”… a build-up of calcium that can turn your teeth yellow or brown. Excess chlorine can also leave your teeth brittle and sensitive. So, if you swim frequently, brush your teeth when you climb out of the pool. Also, consider using a fluoride rinse to help strengthen your teeth.

Then be careful when you pop your calcium supplements. Rutgers University says calcium can prevent your body from absorbing the antibiotic. You can still take your calcium, just make sure it’s at least 3 hours before or after you take your antibiotic.

Do you ever get foot or leg cramps?

They’re intensely painful. So here’s why we get them – and how to make them stop. This comes from physical therapist Pamela Cole.

First, contrary to popular belief, they’re not caused by exercise – but exercise can exacerbate the reason why we get them… Which is nutritional deficiencies. More often that not, they’re caused by an imbalance of water and electrolytes in your body, like potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium. When that happens, your muscles can contract on their own.

So here’s how to stop a foot cramp fast:
Pull your toes toward you, using your hands. That stretches the muscles that are cramping and helps them relax. You can also massage the cramping muscle… or try a warm compress on your foot. Both pressure and warmth help boost circulation to the area, and that can help restore nutritional balance and stop your nerves from misfiring.

Then, after your cramp stops, physical therapist Cole says: Put two pinches of salt into 12 ounces of water and drink it. That’ll balance your water-electrolyte levels. You can also eat half of a banana, which provides potassium and magnesium.

And to stop foot cramps before they start, make sure you stay hydrated. Also, get more magnesium from foods like bananas, dark leafy green veggies, nuts, fish, beans, avocados, and dark chocolate.

Finally: Give yourself regular foot massages to improve circulation.

It makes the perfect bedtime snack. The carbs in cereal increase levels of the brain chemical serotonin, which makes us feel happy and relaxed. And the milk’s tryptophan content converts to serotonin, too. Plus, there’s calcium and magnesium in milk, both of which are calming.

If you eat yogurt, don’t pour off the watery stuff on top. It’s super healthy. It’s whey – and it has tons of protein, calcium, vitamin D and probiotics. So if you pour it down the sink, you’ll miss out on all the health benefits. Instead, mix it in!
