What’s the deal with everybody using jars of coconut oil instead of butter? Well, although it’s 90% saturated fat – it’s a different type of saturated fat. It contains lauric acid – which your body processes much faster, and more efficiently, than the saturated fat from a T-bone steak. That means less fat gets stored in your body as belly fat. And you can use coconut oil in place of most other fats – like butter, as I mentioned. It’s also good for cooking and baking, because it breaks down at a higher temperature. Wanna try it? Look for it at the supermarket – but check the label for VIRGIN coconut oil – and avoid anything that says “partially hydrogenated” which is code for unhealthy trans fat.

You know to avoid foods that contain trans fats – like certain margarine products, shortening and some vegetable oils. If they have trans-fats, you’ll see the words “partially hydrogenated oil” in the ingredients. But do you know what you should replace them with? It may surprise you: It’s LARD!
Despite its reputation, ounce for ounce, lard contains more polyunsaturated fats than olive oil – and 20% less saturated fat than butter. And it’s trans-fat-free. That’s according to the USDA. So, if you need to fry or bake – go ahead and use lard.

When you want something sweet with your coffee, which do you choose: Coffee cake or a couple biscotti? The biscotti wins! That’s according to registered dietician Dawn Jackson Blatner. She says, even though they’re made from the same basic ingredients – flour and sugar – the biscotti has half the calories and a‑third of the fat. The big difference is butter – or a lack of it. Traditionally, biscotti is made without any butter or oil. That’s why they’re so hard and crispy. And if the biscotti has almonds, you just increased the antioxidants and protein.
