It slows down as we age because we naturally lose muscle mass. So you may have burned 2‑thousand calories a day just existing at age 20. But by age 40, you’re burning 80 calories less. That may not sound like much. But if you don’t burn off 80 more calories every day – or eat 80 fewer calories – you’ll pack on 8 extra pounds in a year.

Locking our eyes only on the most distant thing in our path – and ignoring whatever’s just ahead – messes with the data our brain receives…And suddenly, even the most distant objects seem closer, and easier to get to. And since we subconsciously pace ourselves based on distance – when our brain feels like we’re “almost there,” it makes us move faster.
To get the most out of this trick, the experts suggest setting mini-goals along your route – like stop signs, trail markers, or trees. As you approach one, shift your focus to the next. You’ll end up exercising longer, moving faster, and burning more calories.

It may seem obvious, but the journal PLOS One says runners who talk on the phone or check text messages don’t get a great workout. Their intensity drops off. So turn off notifications and silence incoming calls… And tune into your workout playlist, instead. Because runners listening to music enjoyed their workout more, ran faster, and burned more calories than those who totally unplugged.

Nope. Colds and flu are caused by viruses, not weather. However, cold, dry air keeps viruses alive longer – so we’re more likely to catch them. But as far as your workout, even if it’s chilly, go for it. You can actually burn more calories in the cold. Just make sure if it’s really cold to keep your fingers covered and your feet warm so you don’t end up with frostbite.

mix-up-workoutIf you’ve been hitting the gym on a regular basis, but you’re not seeing results any more – it’s time to change things up! According to fitness expert Mary Jayne Rogers, when you’re starting a new exercise routine, your body isn’t as efficient, so you burn more calories…But as you get used to the exercise and become more fit – the same routine require much less energy. So, if you’ve been swimming laps, try the elliptical. And if you’ve been sticking with yoga, it may be time to try Pilates. When your body gets a new challenge, you’ll see results again.
