Are you overeating after a workout?

You exercise like crazy – so why aren’t you losing weight? You may be eating back all the calories you burned – and then some. That’s a symptom of “runger” – the hunger you feel after a big workout or long run. To avoid runger, have a small snack 30 minutes before your workout. Something low-fat and carb-based — like graham crackers with a teaspoon of honey. That’ll digest easily and give you instant energy. Then, an hour after you exercise, have only protein and healthy fats. That’ll keep you feeling full so you won’t overeat.

Take a walk through the hills, or across uneven ground. That’ll help you burn 13 more calories per minute, and engage more muscles than walking on a smooth, level path. That’s the latest from a study at the University of Rome. If you’re not near a trail, you can get a similar calorie-burning boost by walking on a treadmill raised to an incline of 3 percent.

According to Yale University research, playing board games like Scrabble or Monopoly burns calories (but don’t eat any snacks while playing)… 20% more calories than watching TV. So playing just two one-hour games a week can help you lose weight – and reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes. In fact, the Yale research says it can cut the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 15%!

If you had to wait outside for 15 minutes in winter weather for the bus today, I have good news. According to a study in the journal Cell Metabolism, those 15 minutes of shivering in the cold have a similar effect on the body as an HOUR of moderate exercise. In the study, researchers put subjects under cooling blankets – and saw that they had a rise in the hormone irisin. That hormone turns our main type of body fat – white fat, which is bad – into BROWN fat, which actually burns calories to warm us up. Cold weather – and the study’s cooling blankets – work, because when we’re cold, our muscles contract in a way that’s similar to what happens when we exercise. So the next time you’re literally cooling your heels outside this winter, just think, “My brown fat is switching on, and burning calories like crazy!”

If you swap your mayo for mustard you’ll save about 90 calories per tablespoon. And, here’s another reason to make that change… You’ll burn more calories, too. Scientists at England’s Oxford Polytechnic Institute found that one teaspoon of mustard can boost metabolism by up to 25% for several hours afterward. It’s thanks to the spices and phytochemicals in mustard. And the hotter the mustard, the bigger the metabolism boost.

When you’re walking, go a little faster sometimes, then go a little slower…… and keep switching it up. According to the journal Biology Letters, varying your walking speed burns 20% more calories than strolling along at a steady pace.

You can burn calories without traditional exercise. Take your kid’s backpack – or your heavy handbag – and carry those 10 extra pounds around. Throw in a couple hills, and you’ll burn about 415 calories per hour at a regular walking pace. That’s 57 calories more than you’d burn strolling without the backpack or handbag.

If you’re having trouble motivating yourself to get to the gym – or go for a run – try this: Download an audiobook. A study from the University of Pennsylvania found that people went to the gym 50% more often when they had an audiobook to listen to.
And once you get to the gym, focus on exercises that use your legs. You’ll burn a lot more calories. That’s because our legs house the biggest muscles in our body – so working them increases our calorie burn.

You don’t have to go all out, on every run. In fact, you should take it easy on 4-out-of-5 runs. That means, being able to sing along with your workout playlist between breaths…… Then, for the fifth run, push yourself to the point that you can’t sing. According to the book “80/20 Running,” that’ll help you get faster and fitter, and avoid burning out. Because low intensity runs burn more fat – while high intensity ones burn more calories overall.

When it comes to exercise, running is one of the top calorie-blasters.

But some exercises do even more:

…Like indoor rowing. It burns two calories more per hour than running. Plus, it uses the muscles in your legs, back, arms and core.

Next: Burpees torch 4 more calories per minute than running. But you need to blast out 10 in a minute.

One final exercise that burns more calories than running: Jumping rope. Plus, it uses more muscle groups than jogging, and improves your balance, and coordination.
