…eat plenty of broccoli and onions. A study in the journal Genesis found 3 cups of cruciferous vegetables a week led to less brain fog and better decision-making and helped the brain function as if it were 6 years younger! It’s down to a compound called sulforaphane, which works to repair and replace aging neurons. You just need 3 cups of cruciferous vegetables a week, like broccoli, cauliflower, or cabbage. And add a quarter cup of onions to your daily diet to help the liver flush away toxins, which can slow brain aging by 21%.

To boost your brainpower, and slow age-related mental decline, spend 2 hours a week texting friends and learning new things. Mayo Clinic research found staying socially active and discovering new information can reduce mental slowdown by 42%. Because it strengthens the area of the brain linked to long-term memory storage. It’s the same benefit you get from reading for a-half hour a day. The more you challenge your gray matter, the slower it’ll age. And it doesn’t matter if your brain gets a workout online or in real life.

Just calculate the tip in your head! According to the book “Boost Your Brainpower In 60 Seconds,” using your phone’s tip calculator robs you of a chance to exercise your brain – the same way driving to a restaurant a mile from home robs you of the opportunity to exercise your body. And unless we reinforce simple mathematical skills, our brain will eliminate those neural connections because they’re not being used. Meaning, it really IS a case of use it or lose it. So the next time you’re out to eat, figure out the tip in your head to keep your brain sharp!

Moms-to-be, you can boost your unborn baby’s brainpower by making fruit your go-to snack. Researchers at the University of Alberta analyzed what mothers-to-be ate, and compared that to each baby’s IQ in the first year of life. The result: Moms who ate more fruit while pregnant had babies who scored higher on developmental tests – and the more fruit they ate, the higher the baby’s IQ. The reason? Because fruit is packed with antioxidants and nutrients, which pass from moms to their unborn babies.

Eat more avocado! Research at East Carolina University found avocados contain high levels of vitamin K and pantothenic acid… a nutritional one-two punch that improves communication between neurons, and boosts production of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which boosts focus. After eating just half an avocado a day for a week, your risk of brain fog and memory lapses will be cut in half.

Take a brisk 30-minute walk every day. The reason? Because the connectivity between brain circuits diminishes as we age – which tends to slow our thinking and muddle our memories. But researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that exercise helps revive those flagging circuits – and helps keep your thinking sharp.

You know playing games, anything from Scrabble to chess, can boost brainpower. Well, neurologist Dr. Kenneth Kosik, who wrote “Outsmarting Alzheimer’s,” says games of skill strengthen memory, and sharpen our ability to strategize and predict what an opponent may do. And that’s the type of strenuous brain exercise that can keep a brain healthy by growing new cells and neural pathways.

If you want to boost your brainpower, shower with your eyes closed… And grab the soap and shampoo without looking. Or find your toothpaste and load up your toothbrush using only your sense of touch. That’ll give you a brainpower boost by taking your mind off auto-pilot. Because when we do routine things in a new way, it immediately stimulates the growth of new nerve cells that keep the brain flexible, while improving memory and focus.

…indoors or out! Studies show that there’s a certain type of bacteria in soil that we breathe in, and seeps through our skin – and it makes us calmer and better thinkers! The bacteria stimulate the growth of brain neurons, and boost production of the brain chemical serotonin, which reduces anxiety.

peanut butter and grapes-wp

Preventing memory loss as we age may be as simple as eating peanut butter and red grapes for lunch, or drinking a glass of red wine with dinner. Resveratrol – an antioxidant compound in red grapes and peanuts – has already been shown to improve heart health… And new research in Scientific Reports shows it improves spatial learning and memory, too. In fact, resveratrol may even be able to boost the brainpower of people with severe neuro-degenerative conditions, like Alzheimer’s disease. So, have a peanut butter sandwich at lunch – and red grapes as a snack.
