Whether you’re getting a shot, Botox or a mole removed, text a friend right before-hand. The distraction and social connection can make it less painful! Researchers from Cornell found people who texted a loved one before minor surgical procedures were 4 times less likely to need pain meds than people who didn’t text.

Did you know that staring down at your computer all day could give you “computer face?” That’s a new term cosmetic surgeons use to describe the sagging jowls and eye wrinkles common in people who spend their days hunched over computers. The sagging jowls are caused by constantly looking down, which shortens the neck muscles and makes the neck baggy. And the wrinkles are caused by squinting and frowning while concentrating on the screen. And doing it for long enough, or frequently enough, will make those wrinkles and lines permanent. To save your face: Set your computer at eye level, and hold your smartphone at eye level, too. And if you find yourself squinting at the screen, go into settings and increase the size of the typeface. By simply increasing the size of the font, we may be able to hold off on the Botox a little bit longer.

Botox has another new use: Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding. About 13% of the population grinds their teeth in their sleep, and Botox is now being used to help. A strategically placed shot of Botox can prevent the muscles in your jaw from contracting as hard, without freezing them completely. And the effects last up to 6 months. The Bruxism Association says the research is convincing, and Botox is just as effective as other treatments, like mouth guards.

…try some blueberries, first. Research at the University of Hawaii found the antioxidants in blueberries slow the formation of fine lines and wrinkles… because they boost production of collagen and elastin, the inner structure that keeps our skin smooth and supple. Those same compounds also help heal damaged skin – making it look younger and healthier, again.

Smartphone squint! We spend 4 hours a day squinting at tiny phone screens, while scrolling through Twitter and Instagram. Which dermatologist Tina Alster says can kick-start – or increase – the formation of wrinkles in the corners of the eyes, under the eyes, and between eyebrows. Your best bet: Consciously relax your face while looking at your phone… Use anti-wrinkle cream containing retinol, which helps build collagen… And, if necessary, there’s always Botox.
