So you’re sick – and you’ve been using the same tissue to blow your nose all morning. Is that a problem? Well, according to Dr. Wendy Bennett, an internist from Johns Hopkins, that ratty tissue won’t hurt you – but it could hurt those around you. Because each time you touch it, you’re touching your infected mucus germs – and then whatever you touch afterward will be contaminated with your virus. So grab a new tissue and use that. Or sneeze into your sleeve, since that’s less likely to touch other surfaces or people.

If you blow your nose with the force of a typhoon, you may be making yourself sicker in the process. That’s according to Dr. Neil Schachter, medical director of the Respiratory Care Department at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital. He says, typically when we blow our nose, we produce 10 times as much pressure as when we sneeze or cough. And the more pressure, the more likely it is that mucus will shoot into our sinuses, spreading the infection. So how hard is too hard when blowing your nose?

Dr. Schachter says, if you don’t feel any pressure in your sinuses before you blow, but then feel it afterward, you’ve blown too hard. And beware of a crackling sound in your ears. That’s excess mucus being blown back into the middle ear – hello, ear infection. So if you’re completely congested, the best thing to do is to loosen mucus before you blow. You can do that by spraying a saline mist into your nose – give it a minute to settle in and work – then blow gently, one nostril at a time.

Hum before you blow!
That’s because hard blowing can trigger “reflux nasal congestion” – or swelling of the sinuses that can trap infection-causing mucus and keep you sick longer… That’s according to ear, nose and throat doctor, Jordan Josephson.

Instead, hum in a low tone. The vibrations will stimulate the hairs in your nose, helping them whisk away mucus down the back of your throat. Then, gently blow your nose to clear out the debris.

It’s caused by air moving through a narrow space in your nose – which means, you’ve probably got some junk up there. Blowing your nose should help, but if it doesn’t, just wait until your congestion clears, or try a saline nasal rinse. However, see a doctor if the whistling starts immediately after an injury. A right hook to the face, or too much nose picking, can cause a perforated septum… Which is a hole in the wall between your nasal passages — and could possibly require surgery.
