The high-sugar foods we tend to eat all summer – like ice cream, popsicles, and Frappuccinos – can make us feel gassy and bloated. That’s because sugar feeds our intestinal bacteria and makes it multiply. The solution: Sip a glass of mint iced tea! Peppermint contains menthol, which stalls the growth of gas-producing bacteria. Mint also relaxes stomach muscles; it has an antispasmodic effect – which means it can relieve gas and cramping. In fact, UCLA scientists found that sipping a glass of mint tea after meals helped reduce stomach trouble for up to 69% of people tested.

Skip these foods that cause gas…

First, be careful with sugar-free gum. It contains sorbitol – which takes a long time to digest. And undigested sorbitol in your small intestine acts as hothouse, fermenting bacteria, which can cause flatulence.

Also, skip protein bars that contain soy. Processed soy-isolate contains sugar molecules that the body can’t break down entirely. So they hang out in the gut, fermenting, and causing gas and bloating.

One more gas-inducing food: Almond milk! It can contain a thickening agent called carrageenan. It’s made from seaweed, and it’s been linked to ulcers, inflammation, and other gastrointestinal problems.

Eat more beets! Whether they’re red or yellow, beets contain inulin, a type of fiber that boosts production of digestive enzymes. And French researchers found they help keep food from hanging out in your gut, producing gas and triggering discomfort. In fact, just a half-cup of beets can help relieve bloat and indigestion within 30-minutes, and cut your risk of heartburn in HALF.

Going on a date – have an important meeting? Skip these foods that cause gas… and they’re not the usual suspects like broccoli and beans.

First, be careful with sugar-free gum. Not only are you taking in more air when you chomp gum, which can cause gas and burping. The ingredient in sugar-free gum – sorbitol – takes a relatively long time to digest, and undigested sorbitol in your small intestine acts as a hothouse, fermenting bacteria, which can cause flatulence.

Also, skip protein bars that contain soy. The processed “soy isolate” contains sugar molecules that the body can’t break down entirely. So they hang out in the gut, ferment, and cause gas and bloating.

One more gas-inducing food: Almond milk! Dairy doesn’t have the lock on stomach distress. Almond milk can contain a thickening agent called carrageenan. It’s made from seaweed, and it’s been linked to ulcers, inflammation, and other gastrointestinal problems.

That’s because apples are rich in butyrate – a compound that soothes the gastrointestinal inflammation that triggers gas and bloating. According to scientists, eating 3 apples a week will prevent indigestion and belly pain for 60% of us.
For the best results, stick with cooked apples, like applesauce or oven-baked apples. That’s because heat breaks down the simple sugars – AKA fructose – in apples… Which helps prevent the growth of gas-producing gut bacteria.

Ladies: When it comes to PMS, two foods can help you feel better:

•First: Flaxseed. It can reduce the severity of cramps, because it’s loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. They reduce inflammation – and prevent production of a chemical that intensifies muscle contractions.

•Another PMS food: Spinach. The magnesium in spinach eliminates excess fluid from the cells in your body, to reduce bloating.

Take a pass on soufflés!
Whipped foods, and foods with a bubbly or airy texture can cause all those things. So if you have a date or have to be in close quarters with someone, say no thanks to the soufflés, whipped cream, cheese puffs and soda.

You know to avoid things like soda, sodium and broccoli if you don’t want to bloat.
But what if you’re already bloated? What then? Do this: Apply heat. Either from the inside, by sipping hot tea – or the outside, with a hot-water bottle or heating pad. The heat will relax your colon and help the gas work its way through your system. Or get some exercise. That can stimulate your GI tract and move the gas along. But maybe exercise solo – instead of at the gym.

Here are the basic differences between a food allergy and intolerance:

With an allergy, the tiniest exposure to food will cause hives, and difficulty breathing. But intolerance just means your digestive system can’t handle a certain food… So, if you only feel gassy and bloated, that means you’re intolerant.
